I am wondering if there are any current pilots in the MidWest area on the boards. I'm working on putting my information together right now for the upcoming year and have quite a few questions/advice requests if you're around. Also, I am a civilian only and don't have much on-base experience. If you are around, would you mind PM'ing me or e-mailing me through the boards? I'm 28 (next Monday) and am obviously running out of time to apply before being "over 30" and therefore too old to enter UPT without a waiver. Thanks for any help provided. It is very appreciated. |

Dang man. Jack #### to UPT in 2 years is going to be an uphill battle. I'm thinking Everest kind of uphill. Do NOT limit yourself to that area (unless civvy job requires it.) You're going to have a better chance at a slot at units that are geographically removed from.... anything. (read: AKANG). If you're serious about flying in the Guard, you should move up to ANC and rush the AK ANG units pretty hard. They have a board in the next few months for several different units that fly tankers, various herks, C-17s, and helos. That's going to be your best shot. If you're stuck in that area, I'd say rush the 167th pretty hard. I've heard they don't get too many applications. PS, AFOQT and TBAS need to be done yesterday. Keep us posted with your progress, and good luck.

Thanks for the info, FF. AFOQT is done with decent results from 2006 and I am going to find a place to take the TBAS today. There are several locations within a couple hours, so that shouldn't be too hard. I took the BATS at WPAFT in Dayton and it was a nightmare to get the proctor to let me take and then getting on base (being a civvy) wasn't a royal PITA. Thanks for the info on the 167th. They're on my list! Unfortunately, my family life requires being more local than my work. I have a wife and a 2nd child due in a week or two, so family matters are important. Either way, it'll give the wife some support if I end up in the sand or somewhere else. Have a good one and I'll keep you updated! |

If you have questions about the 167th, you can PM me. I'm enlisted in the unit. I was accepted for a slot a few years back but was DQ due to failing the flight physical for a lazy eye. I may be lazy, but my eye is fine!!!!

Hi, WC! Thanks for popping in. I called the 167th this morning and left a message with the pilot recruiter. Hopefully I get a call back soon. So it is true that they're hurting for pilots? That seems odd since all these units are so damn competitive. I sure wish I had decided to do this in my teens so I could have did some enlisted work during school and gotten to know some guys and how things work. I'm totally out of the loop on a lot of the military stuff. Any help, on or offline, that you can give is greatly appreciated. Thanks!! |

Yowzers... I just realized how far away the 167th is from my current location. Who knew that WV went almost all the way to DC?!?!

Yea, we're only and hour and a half drive from both Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. If you have any specific questions you can think of, just shoot me a PM and I'll answer them as best as I can. I'm actually not sure about the current situation they are in as far as filling slots.

Thanks for the offer, Windchill. I think due to the distance, I'm probably not going to shoot for the 167th. While I think the C-5 would be a great experience (flying an aircraft weighing 840,000#!!!), driving 7-8 hours each way would not be. (And I'm sure there is a living distance requirement.) Thanks again for the help offer. |
