| Junior Member | So had anyone ever been through them? I was considering them since they have a base here in MKE, and It wont take all of my time like active duty would. As far as benefits, lets say I enroll in flight school, does the M.I.G bill kicks in right after I get out of technical training? Would they cover tuition at all? Thanks for the help! |

| After you get your PPL they'll pay for up to 60% of your training.. The VA website said "Flight Training: If you take flight training, you can receive 60% of the approved charges for the course, including solo hours, up to the amount of your total benefits." You get the money for 36 months, and the amount you get depends on how many units you take. If you go full time the amount is $309. That could be $11,124 for flight school, but it depends on whether or not they're paying you like you're going to school full time. You can also get a bonus if you sign up for a career field that's hurting for people. Sometimes they give you a choice of a cash bonus (which they tax like you wouldn't believe), extra money for school (mine was an extra $350), a student loan repayment, or a combo of 2 bonuses. Also, I wouldn't believe the recruiter too much. Not saying they're all liars, but their job is to get you to join..not tell you what's best for you. Good luck. |

| Old Skool | There are tons of benefits of joining the Guard. Granted you don't get as much GI Bill as you would from the Active Duty, the amount is still pretty good. Here in WI you get to choose from different pools. There's the GI Bill and GI Bill "Kicker", through which WI adds amount to each GI Bill. When I was in school it was $350 a month. That's ON TOP of your GI Bill payment. There's also 100% tuition reimbursement. These days, you have to attend a school actually in WI to qualify for that. And there's some other reimbursement thingy that once a year, the Guard will pay a certain amount of school loan balance. Also, you get really good training that you could use in the civilian world for some jobs. I used the GI Bill and 100% tuition reimbursement. My school was 100% paid for. PM me if you have any questions about the 128th here in MKE. I've been a crew chief here for 7 years. Before that I was a crew chief for 4 years active duty.

| Old Skool | I got to use GI Bill for flight training. I did my inst and commercial with it. It saved me tons of money. Back in the late 90s, after all the cuts, it was really difficult to get approved to use GI Bill for flight training. It was about a 50/50 shot and it felt like approvals were random. It heard approvals occur more often these days, though.
