I am currently a warrant officer candidate in the national guard but I am considering going active duty army for several reasons. One I have already been waiting a year for a date for school and no indication of when it will come, two I already have a huge amount of student loans to pay off, and three I need a steady full time job to pay off my loans. I considered going the guard route and trying to convert the military ratings into fixed wing ratings and maybe going the CFI route but I would still be looking at tacking on a considerable amount of debt to finish training not to mention the crappy CFI pay. I already have my PPL and have flown mainly fixed wing and a few hours rotary wing and honestly I think I would be happy making a living flying either. So my question is for those who have experience with the active duty army aviation. Do you think it would be better to go this route? I was active duty enlisted infantry for three years and know a little about life in the active army but I am honestly pretty clueless about aviation warrant officers. I loved the job of an infantryman especially the riding around in blackhawks part but wasn't a big fan of the QOL. Any insight into my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

I think you'd like it! I to was a enlisted infantry-man prior to becoming an aviator, and you're right -- the QOL does suck! You'll find it's a lot better as a Warrant. Do a search in the Military Forum and you'll find plenty written on Army Warrants and Aviation. It can be hard work, but it's very rewarding, and sounds like a path that can take you where you want to go. If you have anything specific you'd like to ask, just let me know. |
