Default Air Force Pilot commitment

Is there a way an Air Force pilot can transfer their commitment time to the reserves or national guard. The reason why Im asking is because I went to an air show and met a United Airlines pilot who flew for the reserves. He told me he would fly (for United) during the week and on the weekends for the reserves. Im just wondering how he was able to do that. Thanks
