I was wondering if there were any AD pilots who would share how they like it? Everyone says go guard/reserves but I'm looking at all my options.

Naw...things were pretty much the same way 30 years ago...or even 40. Constantly moving...between 1966 and 1978 I had 5 PCS stations and more TDY than I can remember. Constantly deploying...(can you say Vietnam)? and all that followed? Anal retentivness...(can you say Inspector General or in SAC Combat Evaluation Group)?

Although it would seem to me in this day and age, even if you do go guard or reserves, you likely will do a substantial amount of active duty and deployment. I think the days of the "weekend warrior" are gone. I think the Guard and Reserves are getting called up to active duty more and more and will continue to be.

So would you recommend going Guard/Reserve over AD?

Remember, regardless of how much time you may be used/deployed by the ARF (Air Reserve Forces...Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard) you are still part time! (unless your are one of the full time technicians) So if you aren't used/deployed or training you are not getting paid. So...unless you are independently wealthy (if you are DEFINITELY go with the ARF) you will need a FULL TIME job. Me? I did active duty, full time technician, part time reservist-full time Delta Air Lines...IOW I did it all! Each is different. Each has it's pros/cons. Bottom line KNOW the pros/cons before you select EITHER ONE!

Thanks for the help. The aircraft I want to fly would keep me at one base. Just checking all of my options.

Which aircraft would that be? Just remember, your job as an officer ( be it staff puke or pilot) comes ahead of your career aviatior aspirations (at least for AD)! You may want to fly an aircraft only based in one particular place (can't think of too many) but Uncle Sam may have other plans! |
