| The Marine Corps is getting its own Special Operations Command, and its headquarters and the bulk of the 2,600-strong force will be at Camp Lejeune, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday. Full Article Very good news! I wonder what they will be called? |

| MarSpecOpCom or some similarly stupid Navy/Marine contraction. Why is this very good news? Seems the Marines are simply vying for their piece of the "special operator" funding pie.

| I just think it is really cool that they get a special ops team too. I've always wondered why they didn't have one. AF, Navy, and Army have theirs, Marines didn't up till now. And as far as name, I meant like the Navy SEALS, the Army Delta Force, and AF Pararescue. |

| In the past the Marines were content because they considered each MEU(SOC) they deployed a Special Forces unit. A MEU(SOC) is just a regular infantry battalion that has the capability and training to do all those direct action type missions that the special forces units can do. Need to rescue hostages, a MEU(SOC) can do it. Need to pick up an shot down Air Force pilot behind enemy lines, a MEU(SOC) can do it. Need to take down a non-compliant merchant ship, a MEU(SOC) can do it. Need covert terminal guidance for a precision weapon, a MEU(SOC) can do that too. The best asset of a MEU(SOC) was that no matter what the mission, it was always six hours away from warning order to execution. It's actually impressive seeing the planning go down. "Assemble the CAT in the War Room." When that PA announcement went out, everybody knew something was going down. Within 30 minutes, mission, commander's guidance and commander's intent are established. Within 90 minutes, courses of action are presented with estimates of supportability along with all the satellite imagery of the target area, beach surveys. Within 2 hours course of action is selected and detailed planning begins. At 3 hours detailed planning is done, with the final confirmation briefing. The last 3 hours is getting all the mission players prep. At 6 hours, Marines are executing. But I guess the Navy's been tight on the Marines' pursestring lately, this is a good way for them to get more money. - Navy tightwads.

| Its just another chance for the pentagon to waste money and create more jobs. Nothing more. Can't marines join the SEALs? For that matter, why not simply move the Seals under the marines. It is a better fit anyway, except that SEALs are typically smart and marines....nevermind. ![]()

| Shooter, To tie into your money-saving aspect, I'd also advocate all Close Air Support mission activity and assets be given to the Army, and the Air Force absolved of having to support the Army. The Army could have it's own integrated CAS that works for it just like the USMC does. As is, the USAF hates the CAS mission and considers it (as it always has) a third-rate mission. But they don't want to give it up since they don't want to lose the $$$ that go with it. IMO, if they don't care about the mission and don't want to devote the chunk of change it needs, then give it up. In that sense too, the Army should be self-sufficient and not have to rely on others for their air support.......it's nice if another service can provide air support on an as-neede basis, but the Army still should have their own. That way, the AF can concentrate on it's Global Reach mission, as well as it's deep-interdiction "beyond-the-FEBA" missions, and the rest of the "pointy-nose, mach-snot" missions it likes to do. Trying to do CAS and keep the mission alive, when your own HQ USAF isn't helping you, truly sucks.
