Default Lockheed looking at Embraer, Boeing (737) for spy plane

WASHINGTON -- Lockheed Martin Corp. is looking at the Embraer 190 and the Boeing Co. 737 as candidates for a new Army spy plane, the company said Friday.

Two other planes are in the running for the Aerial Common Sensor program: the Gulfstream G550 and the Bombardier Global Express, said Judith Gan, a spokeswoman for Lockheed's integrated systems and solutions unit.

The British version called the "Astor" uses the Global Express.

As much as I support Boeing, I hope the EMB-190 wins.

I love the last line of the article.

Boeing is based in Chicago.

It has almost nothing to do with the article, and it's like they're trying to remind everyone that Boeing isn't in Seattle anymore.

Too bad there are so few units being considered by the Army/Navy (<60). I know it's wishful thinking but it would be great to see Lockheed develop their own plane for this role. And if that plane could also be adapted as a commercial airliner, all the better. There is certainly enough of a market in the <200 seat category for a third competitor. But, again, it's wishful thinking on my part. Lockheed has no plans at all to ever return to the commercial marketplace.
