50,000lb for an uparmored HMMWV ? - that's only 12 tons less than an M1 Abrams and 5 tons heavier than an Amphibious Assault Vehicle - AAV's those things were fun to launch... wave the green flag, watch it rumble down the well tearing up the teak decking, roll off the back end and disappear beneath the wake. do a slow three count... breathe again when it pops back up on the surface... or scramble into rescue mode when only Marines pop back up to the surface. Uparmored HMMWVs going off the back end don't seem to be as enjoyable to watch. If we had to put those uparmored HMMWVs onto ships I'd have to really double check my weight and stability and make sure CG and MH are within limits now that for every HMMWV we carry we're really carrying 5 of them. since we can carry about 50 of them, that's 200 HMMWV's of extra weight. Funny, that the Hummer and H2 is too big and they've made a smaller H3 (and still complain about the horrible gas mileage) Meanwhile, the HMMWV is too small and we need another light tactical vehicle. |

The Australian Army is just introducing the Bushmaster. It's probably too big and heavy to be a direct replacement for the Hummer, but here's a snazzy pic anyway: ![]() This vehicle is (I think) designed to carry an infantry section (ie 'squad') to battle, but not in battle. It's not an armoured fighting vehicle or armoured personnel carrier, but it's more heavily armoured than thin skins like Hummers. |

Remove the AC, and it no longer becomes a MX issue . . . [/ QUOTE ] I never had any air conditioning on any of my self-propelled HF radios. (MRC-138 HMMWVs) we must be getting soft these days Although I did find out why Marines don't let officers drive HMMWVs... I didn't think you can roll one. |
