Default Warbirds of tommorow

So nowadays we have the lucky few who own P-51s and other warbirds. In the future, will we have civillians flying their F-16s and other aircraft of today's mil?

Brian

I suspect most of them will be too expensive. Was Larry Ellinson the one who wanted to own a MiG29? Those folks (billionaires) will be the only ones who could do it.

A P-51 or an F-86 or a Hawker Hunter runs out to a couple of thousand per hour total cost. The cost of operation goes up tenfold with a 3rd or 4th generation fighter. Think of the fuel bills alone! Also I think governments will ban their use.

I suspect the most prevalent types will be Macchis 339s, L-39s, Hawks, T-34s, etc, the turbine trainers.

My $0.02 worth, anyway.

Oh but just imagine if you could afford to own an F-16 or something like it...

As far as American hardware of recent vintage, there are a couple civilian-owned T-38s out there, and I want to say there's an F-86 out there on the airshow circuit. With the new jet class at Reno, I'd love to see some F-100s and the like (can you imagine an F-104 racing around the pylons??? ).

That would be sweet. My aunt and uncle's house is like 10 yards away from a pylon, so all the planes fly directly over your head, it's so awesome.

You'd have to have quite a bit of space between pylons for it's turn radius!

But what a machine it'd be to fly!

Slightly off topic, isn't there still an active F-4 squadron out there? I read about it somewhere but not sure where. I also heard there's a squadron of migs used for red flag and other activites.

It is quite a bit more significiant then that. Soon, aerial combat will not be human controlled fromt he air, but instead of the ground

To answer your question Brian.

Yes, sombody somewhere will eventually buy/assemble a F-16. It hasen't happened yet, but it will. Anythings possible with enough money.

Several examples of military jets are built up from parts. And several restored WW2 aircraft are rebuilt completly, so in effect they are brand new hand built airplanes with some old parts and the data plate from the origional.

I rember hearing about some guy out in hollywood that built up 2 Cobra helos from parts he got out of the scrapyard. You've seen them in some movies that the DoD didn't support.

Not military, but if you got a couple mil lying around and it ever makes it to production you could always pick up one of these babies.

That almost looks like a NASA design.

A few years ago at Reno, at the end of their routines, both the F-14 and F-16 demo pilots ran a lap for time around the pylons. At around 630 mph, the Viper won. Coolest thing I've ever seen at Reno--which is pretty much home to most of the coolest things I've ever seen (and the rest are just down the road a bit, outside of Carson City ).

Brian, I just reread this thread tonight ... the Luftwaffe still trains its F-4 crews in the USA at Holloman AFB (?) at least they did until very recently.

The 20th Fighter Squadron, German F-4 training, closed it's doors last January, with the last jet leaving Holloman last February. I went to the last squadron party there.
