Default air force bases

I've noticed a couple of things at Los Alamitos Army Base out here in SoCal ... maybe some military guys can answer a couple of questions:

(1) Why are the taxiways numeric at an army base instead of alphabetical (e.g. Taxiway 7).

(2) Why is there no signage? None of the taxiways or runways have signs.

(3) Why is the controller required to say "check wheels down" prior to clearing you to land?

Controllers at civilan airports say "check wheels down" before landing ... at least they do here in Martinsburg, which if you get technical does have an ANG unit here, who the tower guys are contracted through.

I always got a little chuckle out of that phrase because I'm always flying fixed-gear aircraft

Was your post for Army or Air Force bases? Your title says Air Force bases, but your post mentions the Army.

I'm not trying to harass ya about it, just trying to clarify.

Some are numeric, some lettered. Why they're this way, I don't know.

Some have it, some don't yet.

Required at military and joint-use bases for military aircraft; by reg.

That makes sense ... it's a government official making sure the government aircraft don't do something bad enough i.e. landing on the belly ... just Uncle Sam using his resources to protect his equipment.
