Ran my first marathon today in DC. The Marine Corps Marathon. Awesome day for a run, cool, sunny, relatively light winds. I finished under the time that I wanted, and I am still here to talk about it. And get this.....I did probably 70% of my training on my overnights, even a few super long runs. So, for those that are resigned to gaining weight, being unhealthy, and letting this job kill you.......heres proof. I ran a marathon 30 lbs lighter than when I started training, while flying 90 hours a month.

And yeah, the Marine corps is one squared away group. Those guys/gals do a hell of a job with the organization and execution of the event....year after year. From the packet pickup, to the water stops, to the post race party: AWESOME WORK! And the coolest part was a Marine LT placing my medal around my neck at the finish line. Thanks to ALL who serve. I was proud today to stand there next to these men and women.

Great accomplishment! Pez and I are running a 5K on 11/21. Watch out, in another ten years will be racing you in your marathons.

| Bid overnights with good gyms and nice outdoor trails to run on. Then dig up a little motivation and you are set!

| not impressed until I hear your finish time...good job finishing by the way. I'm still trying to find a way to get our students to park the airplanes closer to the FBO, so I don't have to walk so far.

Hmm.. checking the website, it appears the course may have changed. At one time I believe it went out across Lake Ponchatrain (sp?). and a lot of the course was on CONCRETE. NOT good. Are you just grinding away at the miles or using the run-walk (Galloway method)? We use 10-1s for our halfs. 10min run and 1min walk. It sure works.

I did the race yest in 5:18. Being my first race I wasnt sure how it would go so I set a modest goal of 5:30. My half mara split was faster than Id run the Half in Va beach over labor day, and my ten mile split was right on par. I trained using the galloway method...4:1. Yesterday I started using run walk, but felt good so went to a walk at water station only, then towards the end I just kept running. Wanted to get it over with. The galloway training program really works. Ive gotta check the course. The heat will be the only prob for me. I do great in the cool air but throw in some humidity and I struggle. Prob gonna get in a few more long runs, longer runs, than I did for this race. Be able to go more than 26 in order to make up for the humidity and heat on race day.

Congrats on the marathon. My dad ran three of the Marine Corps Marathons back in the day. They had some people that ran the whole thing backwards, one guy ran the thing in a Santa Claus suit. And one guy pushed his son in a modified wheel chair the whole way. That list few hundred feet was all uphill if I remember right.

Congrats..I was there as well running. Cant believe out of 22,000 finishers I ddnt see you. To put it in perspective from the time the starting gun went off I didnt MOVE for at least 5 minutes and did not cross the start line for almost 16 minutes. I also do the vast majority of my training on overnights. On the short list are one or more of the rock and roll marathons, the "goofy race" in disney which is a half on Saturday and then the full on Sunday (you run both) and the Boston. Congrats...it was a great race and I snapped some good pics during the race. I got the reaper which was one of the more interesting signs out there.

Congrats on the marathon. I've made it up to 10k races. Dang those seemed long, I can;t imagine what running a marathon would be like.

Haven't done a marathon in a LONG time but when I did train, I had two identical pairs of shoes and rotated them so I didn't have to break in a new pair and didn't run one pair out of balance. Worked for me.

My wife does research about childhood obesity and graduated with masters in exercise science. Needless to say she is a huge health nut and keeps trying to get me to run a marathon with her. She trained page by page according to a training book a year ago or so and did great. Afterwards she had a couple stress fractures in her legs though. There was probably nothing she could have done about it the doctor says. Personally, I don't think there is anything worse than running. I hate it. But I put on 1200 miles this past summer cycling. This is my new ride I got last week.....
