Default A Day To Remember..

...at least for me! My first day of IOE, and though a short one with only 2 legs, a blast! Flew from DCA to ATL and back and was "given" the first leg by the training captain and think I did fairly well. I give the landing a 7 in ATL, so I'll definitely take it!!! Probably the hardest part for me today was the radios on the ground, especially in ATL, getting used to who to call and when. I'll get more experience as I'm back in ATL tomorrow morning again.

With a 19 hour overnight here in DC, I was able to check out the Air & Space Museum as well as a somber visit to the Holocaust Museum. I feel like I'd need 2-3 days here straight to see everything.

Definitely a day I won't forget!

I'm so happy for you! I knew you'd do fine! And yes, the Air and Space Museum is a great place to visit. When I was in HEF at training, I went on a day off and loved every minute of it! I'm such a geek...

Don't mention it! You've worked hard to realize your dream and as someone who knows EXACTLY where you're coming from, I can sense your joy and pride. Enjoy the ride---it REALLY is a blast--even on the crappy days!

Remember, no 2 days are ever even remotely the same and that's part of the draw, at least for me!

Holocaust is kind of somber and depressing, though educational.

Definitely educational..I knew the atrocities that went on there, but it doesn't really hit you until you see faces and can actually see what went on there. Very depressing.

The depressing thing is that people could actually do that to other human beings.

Congrats man. The radios get easier quickly and you'll start to realize that almost all large airports seem to operate the same way (from the ones I frequent, at least). In a month you'll be on top of your game.

Thanks Train! Today was 100% better on the radios...as well as the landings. Tomorrow is PHL, so we'll see how the radios are there. Any chance of you moving bases anytime soon??

what my friends say is the first few days are the toughest with the radios, but the captns seem to know every route and frequency, so dont freak out too much.

good job

Takes bout one day to get used to the radios. Ramp to Ground to Tower. Sometimes flipping to Metering between Ramp and Ground if its busy. Alot more flipping frequencies on the ground than at your average GA airport. But with in no time you'll be used to saying Callsign xxxx 5 south for D17!

Yeah...I've had ATL turns 2 days in a row, so it's no biggie now. I especially love the Dixie taxiways...pretty funny.

I got use to "taxi on the right side, cross over to the left side after the RJ pushing back"...ATL is a crazy busy airport...especially the ridiculously long taxi over to 28 yesterday.

How about that wx this morning in ATL?! I flew ASA this morning from FAY and they made us hold for 20 mins while the field was closed. The crew had to do some serious dodging and weaving and the turb was nasty as well. Thank the lord my connection to CVG was delayed due to late crew members!

Oh boy 28, had a 45 min taxi to 28 the other night on the way to Myrtle. Yup, 45 minutes, and this was at 9:40pm! I guess it was the last flight of the night rush hour.

This morning was absolutely crazy getting into ATL!!! We first sat on the ramp for 45 minutes in DC until we were released...and then got absolutely tossed on the flight down to ATL. We ended up holding as well and were close to min fuel when we were cleared. A fun day...with some seriously slow ground speeds...

Those ground speeds are insane! Glad I wasn't flying today, saw there were PIREPS for mod-sev all up and down the east coast.

Thanks for sharing!

Word. The one nice thing you'll run into is hubs for your mainline partner are pretty much all run the same. I was a tiny bit confused the first time I went to Cincy and they were talking about taxiway Dixie, 4 North and all this other jazz. But after that experience, Atlanta made a ton of sense! Newark, Houston and Cleveland seem to all be run in the exact same fashion because it's all Continental Ramp Procedures.

I'm still in Newark, though I missed Houston by 7 numbers and I'm holding a relief line next month. That'll make my life WAY better as now I can trip trade and drop trips a month out instead of waiting for 48 hours before hand. I figure I'll hold Houston on the next bid, though I might stay in Newark until I can hold a relief line in Houston just so I have some more control over my schedule. It's kind of a crappy commute to either place, what with Newark having very few flights but low load factors and Houston having about 9 flights a day (5 on Continental or Express and 4 on Delta I believe) but the loads are much higher.

That's funny because yesterday and the day before yesterday were easily the smoothest days I've ever seen in the flight levels. Things change fast!
