No need to feel ashamed about anything. You went into it studying by yourself with no instructor and time in flight. I can't remember my exact score, but I was 16 when I took my PPL written, but I got roughly the same as you. Like most people have said, you have your chance to prove yourself with the Oral and checkride. By then, you will have had 40 hours plus training and learning all there is to learn for the PPL.

So, don't get bent about the score. Learn from it. And, don't cover up the truth. Glad you admitted it, but integrity is a huge trait one can posses.

Good luck with everything!

Good! Honesty and integrity are essential in aviation, no matter if you're private pilot, ATP, etc...
And a 72 means you passed so you're still good. The oral and the checkride are FAR more important!
