Default Done With Ioe!!!

Well, I got signed off today with my IOE after 30hrs of flying time and 5 1/2 days of flying. Got to do everything I wanted to do while being under the watch of an instructor. Some of these things included 4 takeoffs on rwy 1 of DCA. 2 mt vernon visual approaches to rwy 1 with one being a breakoff to a visual for 33. The LDA to 19 ending up as the river visual to 19. up to PHL, got to see the S turns on short final for 35 with a go-around that happened next that led us to a visual to 26. Several approaches into LGA. 8hrs of Instrument time with close to 14 approaches. A landing into PWM with a 25kt crosswind gusting to 32 with heavy rain and 1 mile vis. (yes I was lucky enough to have been the one flying....my OE Capt was very calm and had no problem letting me do approaches that I will normally not be doing with a regular line capt.) Also go to see several MEL's that were not just a screw missing or something...they were things like thrust reverseres being inop and so on. Got to experience a lot of icing procedure both in the air and on ground so I am used to those. And on to good weather, I got to do a ton of visual approaches with no backup source (i.e. ILS, LOC). Also he encouraged me to hand fly as much as I could/wanted too which I LOVED because everyone made such a big deal about not hand flying the airplane until you have at LEAST a couple hundred hours in it becuase it is SOOOO HARD TO FLY....haha. It was not only easy to fly...but very enjoyable and I plan on hand flying as much as I can because that is when real flying happens. So even though my IOE was shorter than a lot of people's I feel I definatly got exposed to everything that I should have been plus some. Again, I love working here and I am going to enjoy the "real" line that much more. CHEERS

Your enthusiasm shows, but just remember the other pilot's workload goes up significantly when you decide to click otto off and that he's there for a reason.

No, I absolutly agree that the A/P is there to reduce workload and therefore making the flight safer. I also believe that it depends on who you are flying with and whether or not that person can and wants to take on an extra workload. My IOE Capt. wanted me to handfly as much as I could and it wasn't working him a bit. Same when he hand flew (which was ALL the time), it was a little more work but not near enough to make the flight any less safe or to put an unbearable stress on me. I found on visual approaches especially with no backup course or vertical guidance, it was a lot easier to hand fly it instead of using HDG and V/S modes. And on most of our approaches, the A/P was sucking up the LOC so bad that we had to hand fly it anyway. So I think there is something to be said for doing it either way. I am more than willing to put in as much effort as it takes if the guy/gal I am flying with wants to hand fly it and it will be up to him/her to want to put in the efforts for me. (All of this assuming the flight can be done safely without the use of the A/P) CHEERS and thanks for all of your support!!

Awesome man. Sounds like some real good experience you got in a short amount of time.

Did you get the DCA base, or did they stick you with ORF? Just curious since I'm based out of Norfolk with my company.

I think I am going to find out here in a little while when I call scheduling. I am currently listed in ORF but only until Dec 1st when I start my reserve at DCA (which is where I want to be). I am talking with scheduling and seeing if they can forego the short time in ORF and just put me DCA. DCA is absolutly the greatist airport to fly in and out of.

Congrats man. I know how much fun flying that bird is. Although my results were different. DCA is a fun place to fly in and out of. Hand flying was the most fun I had in that plane. It almost seemed easier sometimes than messing with the autopilot. The most fun was flying two legs with no FMS. It was just like the good old days of flying vor to vor. I never got to shoot the approach into 19 at DCA. I always got the approach for 1. Hope that all goes well for you.

Congrats! Sounds like you got to see some intersting stuff. I'd definitely go on to the line with the attitude that you've got a ton left to learn, though--especially when it comes to captains that don't necessarily fly SOP or that aren't as relaxed in the plane as IOE instructors. Keep it in mind that you've still got a lot left to learn and you'll have a great time!

Ohh I don't know crap about this flying. I was just saying, I got exposed to most of the stuff I wanted to be exposed to while under the watchful eye of an instructor. Flying is like the old saying goes...the day you go up and don't learn anything is the day you need to quit. I look forward to learning a lot more in the coming YEARS that I plan on doing this. Thanks for al your support!

Well scheduling stuck it to me the rest of the month which normally won't be a problem except they won't let me go straight to DCA. They want me to do a two week deal in ORF until I am supposed to be in DCA on the 1st. Got to leave tomorrow for ORF and I am on reserve till next monday then off tues and wed back on for thursday all through next monday then off tues-thursday and start my DCA reserve on that Friday.....

So the reason I am not looking forward to this is because since this is not my permanent base, I have no where to stay and no way to get around while I am there. I think a guy that was in my class is going to be nice enough to let me crash at his place while I am there but he is like 30min from the airport so I guess I have to rent a car while I am there....bummer. I asked scheduling to make me a first call so hopefully I can do some flying instead of sitting around paying for a car. I will keep all of you updated on this continuing saga. CHEERS
