Okay, so as some of you know, Ive decided to quit the desk J-O-B and go abroad to save up for the rest of my ratings. Well, on account of my leaving, my law office buddies, in their jealousy, punk'd me big time: At about 4:00 pm today, I get an interoffice envelope handed to me. I turn it over and it has my name on it (obviously), written in the (angry) handwriting of the older, female law office Partner for whom I work. Inside, there is a cardboard beer coaster advertising Fat Tire Ale. On the back, its a post card, which was filled out as follows: "Dear [Equity Partner of the Largest Law Firm in the World]: I am sorry I couldn't make it to the happy hour. I really like you. Signed, [my name]" As first, I laughed - but with a little fear. Just an honest prank. Since she probably knew it wasn't my handwriting, I wrote her an email (she's on a BA flight in Peerage Class to London right now) saying essentially, "it looks like we've both had a prank played on us." I showed the email to my laughing coworkers - and they all fell silent. Apparently, one of them is so good at forging my Partner's handwriting, that I truly believed the interoffice envelope came to me from her - it didn't, that was part of the prank. Now Ive got a (i) very confused boss, (ii) co-workers who are implicated and scared, and (iii) an Outlook message that wont recall. This is possibly the dumbest Member Announcement ever, but I wanted to share what I have learned from this. A. Don't trust your co-workers, and B. get to know the full story before sending an email to your boss.
