Default Hello from New Student Pilot

Hello Everyone, My name is Tyler I am 17 and a senior in High School. I am currently trainning for my PPL in Venice,FL. I have about 18 hours currently. My dream is to have a career in aviaition as a commercial/airline pilot someday. I luckily found Jetcareers awhile back, and have learned a great deal from the site.

Now that I am in my senior year of High School, I have begun thinking about what I need to do, and how I will go about setting myself up for a career in aviation. I know that there are alot of knowledgeable, experienced people on this forum and I look foward to hearing your advice.

This being my first post, I just wanted to say hello and thanks in advance for any help!

Welcome, this is a great place. Stay in school, get a college degree, fly when you can, get a good experience and one day you'll be ready to rock and roll

Thanks for the welcome everyone. To answer Moxiepilot's question, yes I am considering going to an aviation college. Being from Florida, my natural inclination would be to think of ERAU. However, from what I have read on this forum ERAU is not what it is cracked up to be, especially in the $$ aspect. None the less, I have applied there and plan on going to visit them next week. Like I said, from what I read on here I am kinda expecting to be unimpressed. I do think it would be alot cheaper to just go to a state school, and do my flight training at an FBO.

Addtionally, I was thinking about the military route also. Doing ROTC, most likely Air Force throughout college. And trying to nab a flying spot.

If any of you could give me some advice I would appreciate it. Thanks again!

Welcome, man! I started flying in my senior year in High School too. I had plans to go to college, but just fell in love with flying so much that I went straight to ATP (flight school). I don't really regret it cause I got everything done right away and it was at least $15k cheaper when I did it (4 yrs ago). I still haven't gotten my degree and I think I missed out on the whole college experience too... but anyway, you have a great plan... State school, fly as much as you can out of an FBO, and have a blast throughout those four years.... I also considered ROTC when I took some college classes, but I never had much time for it... It seems like a great idea if ya wanna do military flying, but I couldn't see myself signing up for a 10yr contract to fly for them...

Anyway, good luck with it all... PM me if you have any questions....

Welcome. If you are thinking about the ROTC route think about the Marine Corps. they have a program called PLC-Aviation. Good program. take a look and let me know if sounds interesting.

Ask Doug his opinion. He is an ERAU graduate and I think would support the college route. One thing about college - they can never take the degree away if for some reason you cannot fly. Keep your options open.
