Default Greetings

Hello.. My name is Kyle and I have just started my senor year at my high school.

I have always carried an interest in aviation and only in the last year or so have really started considering it as a career. I have already take a discovery flight and loved it.

At this point I'm trying to decide weather or not to find a college and earn a 4-year degree while flying and earning flight time, or to simply join the ROTC.... my parents are of concerned with the money factor of flying. They are willing to pay for the 4-years that i attend a college.. but i need to come up with the extra 5-7k a year for flying lessons. I'm thinking that i would be able to earn about 4k during the summer and if i work weekends i might be able to pull it off. But with minimum wage.. its hard.

All advice is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to JC Kyle. It sucks sometimes trying to balance everything but you should really figure out what's best for you. I agree with Pedex, do some research and consider you options. Although there are a lot of people who didn't agree with my decision not to get a loan for flight lessons, it's working out great for me. I love taking the slower pace and the instructor I have is awesome. Right now, I'm working two jobs, going to college part time and taking the flight lessons. It's not idea but it was and still is the best option for me.

However, I have to say, school sounds like a great idea. I wish I could have gone right out of HS. The way it's going now it's going to take me about 10yrs to get a 4yr degree. Take advantage of the fact that your parents are willing to pay and get your education!!!

This site has been a huge blessing and resource for me and I hope that it can be for you too. Make friends, find a mentor, ask questions, and have fun!

******** Oh carp, posted in wrong topic****************

Another question....

I always hear "universities" being referred to as "Collages" in America.... Why's that?

Up here in Canada, a University is a University, and a Collage is a Collage, with Universities as a "Higher" class place if you will.... Is it not like that in America?

So is Embry Riddle is University or a Collage?

Thanks fokes!

hey thunderRobo!

From what i understand (and i could very easily be wrong) a University is a collection of colleges. Universities are generally much larger. A college on the other hand may focus on a certain type of majors such as arts while another may focus on business majors. Then when all these colleges come together.. they form a university.

Embry Riddle is a university. It seems to be a small campus with about 12,000 students on the main Daytona Beach campus. Btw a great place for looking up facts and cost for colleges is collegeboard.com

Hope this helps!

GPA=Grade Point Average.

In most classes:
A=4.0
B=3.0
C=2.0
D=1.0

So depending on your grades, your GPA might me 3.5 or something. I dont really know how to explain it.
