Just wanted to say Hi to everyone.

a little info about my self...

My name is Derek, 15 years old, grade 11 high school student.
I have been around planes and helicopters since i was young, my dad was a pilot for Hong Kong Government flying Services. I lived around the old HK airport (VHHH) when i was young.

I moved to Toronto, Canada when i was 5, and live about 5 min away from a local airstrip (CNU8)

Last summer, i started taking lessons with Canadian Helicopters at Buttonville (CYKZ) I now have 12 hours in a R22.

I am now looking at becoming an fixed wing pilot.

so lets start with the questions..... hope you guys dont mind.

-do you guys know any good university in canada that offer a program in Aeronautical Science, where i can grad with a degree in Aeronautical Science and a commercial pilot rating?

I was looking at going to Embry Riddle but i would have to take the SAT test, and i honestly dont think i can pass that test. (SAT is the test that an international student must past to be able to enroll in am American university)

I really dont want to go the military route.

I recently meet a person that flys for for AirCanada Jazz and we had a lengthy convo. What he told me was the same as what i was reading here on "JC". Companies like to hire people with a degree over those who don't.

-----Any Tips on how to get started?

I booked an intro flight in a C150 for the 21st and i am really looking forward to it.

Welcome Aboard!!!!!!

I personally know nothing about Canada except that it is north of my current position! The good part about that is there are others on here that may be able to help.

As far as a degree goes... it will get you farther long run, but I do not think ANY regional requires a degree nor freight companies (excluding the big ones like UPS). I am sure your long-term goal is not a regional, but consider the option of getting a degree while flying for one.

Hi. Welcome. Make sure you get a college degree so you have something to fall back on. And it will help you get better jobs as a pilot too. It doesn't matter at all what you major in, just as long as you have the degree.

Seneca College is a good one up there from what I heard, but I don't really know that much about Canadian aviation.

Welcome, I am just picking up flying again after long hiatus, and I firmly endorse getting your degree while getting your ratings. Coming from an airline family, having a fall back skill is very important during the lean times of the business. Also, degrees open up more and many times better options inside and outside aviation.

Good luck, and I am flying the 150 now, you'll have fun on that intro flight.

Hello!

When you are talking about the SAT i assume that you mean the Scholastic Aptitude Test correct? Every student in America has to take the test along with anyone else (international students) who wants to consider applying for a decent college.

Don't let the SAT frighten you. While it is a challenging test, there are many ways to prepare yourself. I know a lot about this since I myself am 17 and have spend many months preparing. Embry Riddle has a fairly low score range. Have more questions about the test feel free to message me.

Hey Stewie, do you know what kind of mark you need to get in highschool be to able to get into Embry Riddle?

Oh, i didnt know that Americans have to take the SAT test too, i feel alot better now

Another question....

I always hear "universities" being referred to as "Collages" in America.... Why's that?

Up here in Canada, a University is a University, and a Collage is a Collage, with Universities as a "Higher" class place if you will.... Is it not like that in America?

So is Embry Riddle is University or a Collage?
