| Senior Member | Hey man...I too busted my Commercial SE a year or so ago. Funny thing was, I had my multi commercial with the same examiner the day before and he gave me accolades on my flying. My pink slip on the SE consisted of entirely too many maneuvers on a beautiful day! Chin up, don't worry, just retrain a tad and go up there again with a clear head :-) You'll be fine |

| Let me guess. Power off 180s? That's a tough maneuver, I almost busted for it. I'm not sure if that's what gave you the trouble or not, but once you study for CFI you'll learn about the validity of a test. A valid test basically means that the average person can achieve consitant results. The Power-off 180 is not a valid test because even the best pilots in the world can only get it within PTS about 50% of the time. Depending on what you had trouble with that may or may not be helpfull to you, but whatever it was just keep working at it and you'll Git R Done next ime. Good Luck.

| I don't know anything about the best pilots in the world - I'm not even close. That being said, that maneuver can be done consistently. Yeah, it's difficult, as it should be. But, I think the 50% stuff is a bit extreme . . .

| Senior Member | I must be the best pilot in the world then... power off 180s are easy if you know where the wind is from

| Learn from it. You will get there one day. Quote:
However, I have my PPL instructors to thank for that. He taught that maneuver as part of emergency training for my PPL rating. ![]()

| Old Skool | its funny you guys talk about power off 180s. my CFI and I practiced this a few times because he wanted me to know it just incase. I'm actually pretty good at it, and that was back when I was a student pilot. as a matter of fact, its one of my fav manuevers hehe |

| Nah, it's not an easy maneuver to perform to PTS. 200ft is generally about one centerline stripe and the space before the next one, which is not a huge distance to hit. Wind is almost never constant from 1000' on the downwind to the surface, temperature is rarely the same, and the aircraft's weight can vary a lot. That makes it really difficult to repeat with any consistency. I got pretty good at them, but that was only because I did a *ton* of them in training (a lot of CFI/Comm students at my school had been busting rides on them). Setting targets for airspeed and altitude works OK on a completely calm day, but in this case the wind was all over the place (and probably really good up and down drafts, too).

Sorry to hear about the bust man. I'm sure you'll dominate next time around. As far as power off 180's...nobody said they had to be super soft. Turn in early, dump full flaps and the gear when you're getting close, and fly that mofo onto your spot! Just kidding...sort of.
