| Newbie | Hi everyone, My name is Chris, and I am 16 years old. (Pretty young eh?) I have been in love with flying since my first time when I was about 10. I have never actually flew a plane, but wish so in the future, and hope to make a career out of it. The reason is because I love being in the sky, it's so clean and free, and very scenic. I know next to nothing about the parts of planes, besides like "engine, wings, etc...". How would you recommend me to begin? I live in Northern Virginia currently. How long does it take to get a private liscense? Since I was thinking about doing that this upcomming summer. Any tips or anything to look out for or do while still in school? I don't want to go into the Air Force because the army is not something I wish to go into. |

| If you're going to be paying for the lessons get a job right now and save save save. This way you can get your private and see if you really do want to continue with it as a career. If you are a little spoiled guy like myself and the parents and/or relatives are helping you pay, then I guess you can go as far as they are willing to dish.

| Welcome. Since you are 16, you can get a student license and medical certtificate and you could take a check ride for your private license on your 17th birthday. ![]() Flying is the greatest feeling in the world. |

| Senior Member | In order to solo, you need a student pilot certificate, which will also serve as your medical certificate. You will have to go to an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). If you call your doctor, he/she may have a list of AME's in your area. You can start your lessons before you get it if you choose, but I would go and get the medical so you know whether or not you can pass it.

| Senior Member | Welcome, there is a lot to know about aviation and a good site for getting the basics down is from the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) located here: http://flighttraining.aopa.org/index...iority=SX05AWS . This should answer a lot of your questions, help get you started with your training, help with locating a flight school, and a free 6 month subscription to AOPA's flight training magazine. Good Luck!

| Read all of Dougs info on the homepage, it will answer a lot of your questions. Getting your PPL next summer is a great idea, the younger you start the better. Also, don't pay attention to Frog Flyer. |

| Coming from someone around your age who has done the same thing, I have to say it is one of the most rewarding and fun things I have accomplished. I would have to say if I could do one thing over I would have saved money and done more flying in a shorter time span. In other words do the entire private in a summer like you may do. If you really want to do it I would start reading up and get a little ahead in the knowledge areas. Oh, and don't forget to have a great time doing all this.

| Greetings Chris! Lots of information on this site, I recently knew about as much as you did, did a discovery flight, then started doing mass research which led me here to Jet Careers! Just surf the forums to find topics related to things you are curious to and if you can't find anything post your questions. LOL and I used to play starcraft broodwars, I lost my cd and play warcraft 3 frozen throne occasionaly now haha, have fun on your journey of knowledge ^^

| Newbie | I have a question, on these cross country flights, is it REALLY cross country? like from Virginia to California? Doesn't that cost a LOT? Would you have to rent the plane for a long time then? Days maybe? |

| More than 50 nautical miles is considered cross country.

| Emergency, Welcome to the site. My advice to you is go to a local airport and ask if they need a hand. You could be a gofer for the mechs or something. You will learn alot about aviation through submersion. You might make some extra money and better yet get some flight time out of it. |
