Post The streak has ended...

Well after a few years in my short professional career, I finally had to squawk 7600 today. I was on the ILS 29R into SCK, just at the FAF inbound when the GPS and Coms went dead. I checked everything and noticed that the alternator gauge showed a discharge and was almost gone. Had to turn off everything except the stobes, which allowed the transponder to work (a bit). So I squawked 7600 and got the light gun signals to land and taxi.

Aircraft? I'm glad you asked!! It's the Alarus!

Neil

I'm just curious why you chose to leave the strobes on?

I was on short final, so that really wasn't an issue for me. It came off after touchdown.

Yep, but right after the coms went out, I took the controls.

My colleagues are going to love hearing about this.

Folks, until I post my list of things that the Alarus does not have going for it, trust me and others on this and tell your flight school to never consider operating one. Neil I'm sure you are converted now after this!

Friends don't let friends buy the Alarus.

Yeah we have two alarus's at our flight school. Man I hate those things. Other than having decent avionics that's about it. I had to do ten hours PIC in it before I could teach in it. And about five hours into it I thought there was no way I wanted to teach in that plane. At one point we had four of those buggers but two were sent out to AZ to a flight school. I feel for the pilots that had to fly them out there.

The avionics aren't even good. The NAV 1 CDIs in our fleet were delivered WAY out of the IFR tolerances straight from the factory. They are calibrated incorrectly so you could use them for a localizer but tuning a VOR radial is no good. I'll write more in the other forum where this kitplane is already being discussed.

I learn something every day, this is what I found after googling your 4000 thing:

9.4.3.11. Whenever an individual aircraft within a formation becomes separated by more than one (1) NM laterally or 100’ vertically from the formation leader, the pilot will immediately squawk code 4000 with mode C altitude encoded.

Very interesting!

(Psst....Nick, you think we should squawk 4000 when we're going on cross countries? )

Whenever outside what is known as "standard formation", that being 1 NM and 100'. Non-standard formation is quite common, as are altitude blocks. Inside standard formation, the flight lead has the squawk for the flight. Also, some MTRs require a 4000 squawk prior to entry.

Once, in an F-16. Somewhat more common these days, as is 0000. Common for me is 4000 for what I do.
