Well, took two tries (was extremely nervous on my initial checkride, couldn't even fly the airplane nervous). But on the second try, flew extremely well and now I'm no longer just a private pilot. Now I'm instrument rated! Thanks to all who have given advice here, certainly has helped. -Kukov |

Congratz. The IFR rating is a bigger step than you probably realize. Stay below the freezing level this winter but ease into some actual down in ALW, if you haven't already. To many guys get the rating having never flown in the clouds. I know did and I learned out of EAT and MWH, but it was summer. What a shock that first IFR cross country can be without a CFII next to you.

Congrats. Like already mentioned, the first time in actual IMC it'll be an eye opener.

I have actually made it into actual in the past during my private license (one of the instructors who was with us when you (DE727UPS) showed us around the 767). But having done my training in cali...we haven't gotten much weather (well, now we have it with the marine layer moving in the day AFTER my checkride). But I'm definitely plannin to head up into the clouds over this year (starting with an instructor friend, then sometime by myself). But thanks for the advice and encouragement. JC has definately been a great place. -Kukov |

I remeber my first time alone in the clouds. I was flying a c-172, the ceilings were at about 1500 and 5 in haze below. I went up to Pontiac michigan and they had me fly the backcourse localizer. I did that ONCE on the PACTD in training. I was a little off the first time to say the least. The second try it all came back. Have fun in those clouds. My suggestion is go play in them as much as you can but only when the they are a little high, just at first until you feel comfortable with being part of the system. |
