| So I get a call tonight at about 7:00 pm from a guy that has been with our outfit for about a year. I did his interview flight and his copilot work and checkride. Then last fall we decided to make him a captain and I did all the training and sent him to another check airman for his test. He calls to let me know that he had a problem with the plane tonight, and he could hear me in his head as he approached the airport (with a new copilot that I also trained, incidentally). I was telling him "stay high" and "why exactly are we below best glide?" and "take the abnormal and make it normal." His throttle cable had broken and he could only get 15 inches of MP at 1500 rpm and did a super job of bringing back his butt, crew, and aircraft in one piece on the runway. Even though we're both captains, I guess a part of me will always be his teacher, and I sure am proud of the guy. Stay safe out there. -LC PS I also asked one of our "gray eagles" to call the crew and let them know that this is the sort of thing that will give thier wives nightmares, and they may want to consider the version for the loved ones at home (!) |

| Nice feeling, isn't it? I remember soloing as a student pilot, and how the things my instructor said popped into my head at various times. Now, as an instructor, I'm sure hoping the students I've taught still hear me talking to them when they fly! Kind of an awesome responsibility, if you think about it. |
