Talking Heading to Juneau!

Hello All!
I'm new to this board, but I just have to brag that I'm leaving my office job on the East coast to spend the summer in Juneau dodging mountains and glaciers.

Anybody been up there? Any words of advice?

Cool!! Congrats on the job... what are ya gonna be diong over there? I've seen a couple jobs on climbto350 that consist of instructing and 135. I've heard its a lot of fun flying around there, hopefully you'll have a blast.

Who are you going to be working for and how many hours do you have?

You will basically be my neighbor I live in Haines, just north of Juneau. What are you gonna be doing? Are you flying for one of the local airlines?

Stay away from granite-lined clouds!

I haven't personally flown up there, but have done a good deal of mountain flying in Colorado. Make sure you get a good understanding of mountain flying and don't get sucked into cloudy valleys with no way out.

Thanks for all the responses! I've got 1180 TT mostly from instructing and mapping. I got on with L.A.B. Kinda feel like I'm taking a blind leap since I don't know anybody up there, but I checked out their safety record with FAA and NTSB databases, and didn't find anything too bad...

Can anyone recommend any books or online primers for flying in these conditions?

L.A.B is a good little airline. Their fleet seems to be made up of Cherokee Sixes. There is also an Islander, and a few Chieftans. Their safety record isnt as good as some airlines up here, but most of the accidents are pilot related. You will have a blast flying up here. Watch out for the tourists, they ask silly questions. If you have any questions about living up here just PM me and I can try to answer your questions. Good luck.

Speaking of FL350. Look's like they have tons of job postings on there. Is it worth it to invest the $15/month??

I've gotten a few job offers in the past year. I actually invested $49 for an entire year and its been good to me so far.

Hey, Kaiser Sose... do you, like, know every line from Usual Suspects or what? Don't tell me you're a Kevin Spacey stalker!

Stalker's a pretty strong word... I mean just because I know what breakfast cereal he prefers... that doesn't make me a stalker!

That orca line just cracks me up.

climbto350 is the best I've seen on the web. Lots of postings every day and pretty diverse too. You'll see stuff from commercial ASE on up. I also did the $49/year deal. Seems worth it to me!

They do have tons of posting on there, but it seems that most of them are more for experienced pilots with higher flight times. I'm not sure if I should invest the $50/yr looking for flight instructor jobs. I might as well use the free AOPA classifieds.

hey kaiser welcome to alaska. i fly out of fairbanks which is a whole lot easier than southeast alaska. let me know when you get up here. i grew up in hoonah(near juneau) and was thinking of going down there sometime to visit. might be able to go grab a drink or something. just a warning about LAB. they are a descent company but do have their issues. ive never flown for them but their reputation isnt as good as say Wings. from what i hear they also pressure their pilots to fly in worse weather. the pressure isnt as bad as it used to be up here but just dont ever let yourself be pressured into flying something your not comfortable with. if you havent try sending a resume to Wings of Alaska cant hurt. anyway youll love that country just watch out for those winds in haines

Here here. The winds seem to change on a moments notice. Also, those winds from Skagway are pretty darn intense. Davidson glacier also seems to have some extreme winds coming off of it. Watch out for flying golf balls in Haines, the approach to 26 is right above a golf course.

You'll love Juneau!!

Yeah, you'd think I would have asked for details about the free housing, but I spent the first half of last year camping out of the back of a skyhawk while doing aerial survey. I figure it's probably more civilized than that so...

Juneau is a beautiful place in the summer. The airport/seaport is nice and the local area is fantastic to explore. Take a fishing pole for your days off or some hiking books. you wont be at a loss of things to do if you like the outdoors.

p.s. watch out for porcupines.

I only get one day off per week, but I was thinking of taking up Sea Kayaking. I can't wait to get up there!

Is it hard to get on w/o living up there? I know there are a few regionals and lots of bush operators. Pay is usually way good depending on location.

I don't live there. I'm flying (airlines) up in a couple weeks. They hired me after a phone interview.

If the current weather keeps up, you will be rocketing everywhere, even with the Hoonah honeys. It is clear and cold
