| Hey all, my name is Jesse, I'm 16 from Connecticut, and I'm a junior in high school. I'm looking in to working towards a commercial pilot. I have already started looking into Embry Riddle's Daytona campus, but I was told I should come here first looking for advice. I want to avoid the military completely. I have been hearing that there are a LOT more options. I definitly want to get a College Degree, I was originially planning on majoring in Aeronautical Science, and minoring in something else (still undecided), as a back up. I'm looking for all the advice I can get on how to become a certified ATP and fly for a major airlines. Thanks -Jesse |

| Welcome. This is a great place to come for well rounded advice and help. I would first recommend keeping you options open about where you go to university. ERAU is a great school but it's REALLY expensive and there are other great schools out there as well. Just some initial thoughts based on your post. Most importantly, HAVE FUN on your way up. I wish you the best! ![]() |

| I know people that have gone to Embry Riddle, it costs alot but they like it. Another school south of them is Florida Institute of Technology, they are a big flight school not to many people know about. www.fit.edu - I used to live in the area and I've heard good things about them too. I got my 4 year degree at a local university and now I attend ATP, not a bad way eithier. Good luck in your search, its smart to start thinking ahead. Keep your mind open don't get set on one place. |

| thanx for the welcome, I just registered for my SATs on collegeboard.com and while i was there i thought i would add some college's to my list, and came up with quite a few. I know this is wierd, but I would prefer to be somewhere in the Southeast or Southwest US (like AZ, CA, or FL). Although it appears thats no problem since a lot of schools are located there. I have it in the back of my head to set up a meeting with my guidance counciler to start looking at the options one on one with him. |

| Junior Member | [ QUOTE ] also, thought I would add, I will be looking into financial aid, as money is tight right now, so any suggestions with that would be useful as well [/ QUOTE ] apply for as many scholarships as possible! i'm sure you've heard about fafsa too (free application for student aid), its government assistance. flight school is probably gonna be a loan, but you could also do your research on that. also, dont pass up the opportunity to become a flight instructor and teach while building hours for a while. have fun flying man! ![]() |

| "I have it in the back of my head to set up a meeting with my guidance counciler to start looking at the options one on one with him." I'd guess that most guidance counselors wouldn't be much help when it comes to good choices in an aviation career. It's pretty specialized. You're average guy who's made it to the regionals is gonna know a heck of a lot more than a high school counselor. |

| Big Chief's Woman | yeah.. and if that counselor tries to tell you, you should aim for something else - then, just get up and WALK out the door.. don't stop! cuz if you really have the "passion" to fly for a living, then you can't have people telling you "you can't/shouldn't do it" KWIM?! you need people on your side that will help you GET there.... if there's any misgivings in conversation, please come back here and discuss it with us -> This group is so awesomely intelligent, there's no WAY they can or would steer you wrong! ![]() |

| thanx guys, yeah, I realized after posting the topic was a bit odd My guidance counciler has admited to not know a lot about the aviation industry, but he said he would love to help me as much as possible. He's a cool guy and isn't one to steer people in a direction they don't want to go.edit: I remembered, I talked to him today and I set up a meeting for sometime next week |
