KOAK ILS 27R in a Diamond Katana DA20-C1 Ok ok, so maybe it's not THAT special. But for me, a 17 year old a few weeks from PPL checkride, it was awesome. It also is a tiny bit harder flying it by hand, and instead of your 736 ILS-ing all the way down to the flare on your PC. Only a little harder... ![]() It was evening and clear skies, so I used the brim of my hat as a makeshift hood. I can't wait for instrument flying.

The Katanas at my flight school are really nice. Two plain old C1s, but also two C1 Eclipses with Garmin 530s and IFR stack.

Man mtsu don't dis the Katana! That's a fun plane! But it isn't ifr certified is it?? I thought it was missing the wire mesh inside the wing needed for lightning protection. ![]()

I love the damn plane. I started on the 80hp Rotax-powered A1, but recently the school bought C1s, with 125hp. The leather seats are another great addition. Ed is right about lightning protection. I'm pretty sure the Katana would disintegrate if it was hit by lightning, being made of composites and all. Probably wouldn't want to take it into actual IMC.

| Old Skool | Congrats willy! Keep it up with the instrument sim-- it'll pay huge dividends when you go for your IFR rating. If you really want to go hardcore on it, get an old copy of some approach plates (most FBOs will give you thier out of date copies for free, sans front cover) and start flying some SID and STARS. Do some missed approaches and some holds and you will be waaaay ahead of the game. Your CFII will thank you for it too. ![]() |
