| I've been waiting quite a while to make this post. On the 7th of this month I came to Dallas gambling that I could finish up my commercial and enroll in American Flyers November 11th CFI Academy. Things started well and I was signed off for the checkride on the 10th. Unfortunately there has been an incredible string of IFR weather in Dallas. There have only been about 3 VFR days in the 20 days I've been here. Therefore, I've fallen far behind my Academy classmates as I had to have the commercial ticket in hand before I could be enrolled in the Academy. Yesterday I finally got a break on the weather and passed the Commercial checkride, so I will be flying my wings off trying to catch up with my class mates. AF does things somewhat backwards as you get the CFI-I as the intitial, and the CFI-A as an add on. I'm pretty we'll ready for the I-I oral, but will have to keep sharp while I catch up the on the flying. To complicate things, I'll also have to keep up with my class mates as they start into the CFI-A material. So far, 2 of 12 passed the I-I checkride on the first attempt. 4-5 more passed the oral, but either need to fly again or haven't yet flown. Looks like I won't have much in the way of free time for the next several weeks, but I intend to be home before Christmas with a CFI-A and CFI-I tickets as my stocking stuffers! When I'm get through the complete program I will post all the details on AF since there has been some negative comments regarding their program. I can say at this point my opinion is favorable. I have seen and talked to the FAA inspector and he goes along on a high percentage of the 141 instructor check rides, so it would appear the FAA is satisfied with the level of instruction being provided. There are some warts and I will cover those when I have time. Later |

| I did the required complex time at the local flight school along with begining to learn the manuvers. I spent about 3 more hours with instructors from AF and they really helped polish up the manuvers. The commercial is not a real tough rating but you need to find an instructor that understands the rating is a visual rating and really focuses on teaching the manuvers that way. After a few trys they are actually easier to fly without looking at the instruments. Today I did my first flight from the right seat. 2.5 hours, BAI, partial panel, vor tracking, an intersecton hold, 2 ILS approaches and that was it. Flying from the right seat is not all that different but it'll be a few hours before I feel real good about landing from over there! |
