The ski trip is on!

Heya everyone,


So here's the deal with the ski trip. I figure we've let the ski trip date thread sit long enough, and we have enough people that can commit that we should set a date. Most people (6) said that they can go on any date (That's assuming that WillFly and TheWife can do any of those), and we have three of us that would have the last February date work best for us (me, skibum and California Surfer). So with that, the date of the first Jetcareers.com ski trip is going to be set for:

Salt Lake City, Utah

February 26th through March 1st 2004.

Me and skibum are flying out and going skiing regardless on the 26th, and we'll return to Michigan on the 1st. That would put the skiing days on the 27th, 28th and 29th of February, 2004.

Some things to discuss: Accomidations for everyone. Me and skibum are probably booking a hotel room reguardless of how things go down.

Lift tickets: Word is that lift tickets are from $50-$60

Transportation: Me and skibum are renting a car with a ski-rack, so we can probably shuttle around two people with us.

What resorts we are going to hit up don't quite matter so much at this point with so many being in the area. Book your flights, we're going skiing!

What else do we need to discuss?

I suggest that any one that is renting a vehicle get a 4 wheel drive. As far as accomodations at our cabin:

There are 7 bedrooms but we need one. So six bedrooms. There is a queen size bed in each, except for two of them have queen size bunk beds. So that would be a good place for anyone that wants to bring kids or a couple of single guys/girls. There is also a loft that could sleep another 4 in sleeping bags on air mattresses. And floor space besides that, but that might be going over board.

The only thing I expect is maybe some small donations for the amount of time it will take me to clean the place after that many people, as I will have lots of laundry and bathrooms and dishes to attend to and that's not my favorite thing in the world so I deserve a little something for it right?

As far as food goes, we can make a menu and divide the costs evenly, or just have every one grab some munchies or whatever from the grocery store, or just eat out pretty much. (But you may not want to do that for breakfast).

If you want to ride the snowmobiles, you would need to pay for the gas, as that adds up fast with 4 machines. It would be a couple bucks for an hour or two usually.

To decide what place you want to sleep at, you may want to decide where you want to ski first. Our cabin will have access to The Canyons, Park City and Sundance a lot easier then Brighton, Alta, or Snowbird. You can get to any place from there of course, it's just a longer drive.

Um.....I can't think of anything else right now so let me know if you have questions. I do needed to double check that Corbin's brothers don't have plans to be there that week but I doubt they would since no one in his family plans that far in advance.

Do you really think a 4x4 is going to be needed for getting around the area on city streets and up to the resorts? The reason I ask is because it's so much more expensive to rent an SUV than it is to get a regular midsized car. I understand having to crawl your way out of heavy snow (after growing up in middle of nowhere Michigan), but do you think it's absolutly nessecary?

SUVs are definately pricier, so why not get one of the monsters? This way more people can ride along and share the costs.

I just looked at tickets from LAX and they're running $123 + tax on DL and UA for a grand total of 140 big ones. So I'm definitely in if I can do it cheaply once I get there. I'd be happy to go in on a car with someone.

Well it depends on where you want to go and how the weather is when you get there. You could try for an AWD like an Outback, it should be less and it would get you any where. Definitly get a front whell if any thing though, NOT a rear wheel. To get to our cabin you would need a 4WD for the last 5-7 minutes of it, but it's not a big deal to leave your car in the parking area and transfer to our car, and we'd take you up the rest of the way. If you are looking at going some where that would require driving through little or bi cotton wood canyons, well, drive really freaking slow or get the 4wd cause that is one accident packes area and a lot of people get hurt there. It's not the snow really that is the problem, it's the ice at night.

Sorry not hot tub or sauna. We TRIED to convince Corbin's dad to get one but he just didn't go for it. Oh well. You can take a hot shower though, is that good enough? Lol.

This sounds like a damn good time...I'll see if I can work my frequent flyer miles for it. If I can then it sounds like it might actually be a cheap too with Michelle and Co. being generous enough with the cabin (that place sounds badass by the way!!).

Park City is supposed to be a great little town...to bad I won't be the big 2-1 untill April

John, as for the SUV thing, no need. I have lived in ND all my life and FWD is all you need. I have taken many trips to the mountains, and if you have half a brain, a FWD vehicle will do just fine.

Well I don't want to be all argumentitive. But we have a front wheel drive car that will NOT make it up the mountain. And I think my husband has a full brain. He has had a lot of experience driving various vehicles, even large stick shift delivery type trucks. If any one could get our car up the mountain, he could. WHen there is ice, it just does not happen.

I'm seriously considering trying to make it out there. I'd probably drive, and I've got a 4wd truck that can hold a few people and a ton of skis.

I didn't mean it in a bad way TheWife. But, with my experience in snow FWD is all you need. Having 4WD is great, but for college kids on a budget, I don't think it is necessary.

If I stay at your cabin, Michelle, I'll be helping you with all the dishes, trash, and laundry as we go along. The laundry might be hard to do because you'll have to wash them after we leave, but at the very least, we need to help you with the trash and the dishes.

But if anyone wants to go in on a place with me that's got a hot tub and sauna, I'm interested. Please do not take that the wrong way, Michelle. I think you've really made a generous offer but I love hitting the hot tub after skiing! And if we find a place with a hot tub and a heated outdoor pool, I'll show you folks the California roll.

No offense taken! It won't hurt my feelings at all if NO one wants to stay with us. You should just do what makes you comfortable and will let you have the most fun. Corbin LOVES the whole hot tub after the snow thing so I know what you mean.

And that's very nice of you to offer to help clean. Help will be appreciated. There will be a lot to do after every one leaves though cause all the bed linens and towels will need to be washed, and the floors cleaned and such and I don't expect any one to hang around to help with all that.

How friendly are the airlines for letting you carry on skis?

You are not carrying on skis. Period. They won't fit in the bins and the poles would be considered potential weapons anyway.

Does SLC have the ski conveyor like DEN does?

Yeah, it's easy. At IAD, they have an oversized baggage line, and you just go to that one. It's quicker anyway. They'll check them just like regular baggage.

I think most of the rental agencies require you to be 25...

I can rent a $150,000 airplane but I can't rent an $8,000 compact car... Go figure.

First, to Michelle: I would certainly plan on paying for my own food and cleaning before we left. You hospitality is very generous and it would be appalling to leave you with a bunch of uncalled for work as a 'Thank you!'

Second, my wife and I rented cars before we were 24. You often have to pay more because of the risk category of the younger age groups, but it's still possible.

Third, snow in the mountains is WAY different than snow in the flatter parts of the country. I can take a front-wheel drive anywhere in the rather hilly Upper Peninsula of Michigan even in a foot or two of fresh snow with a bit of care and creative driving. But trying to drive up a mountain on packed, icy roads is a bit different . . . If Michelle says 4WD, I'm assuming that means 4WD or chains, no arguments allowed! Suggesting otherwise might be considered a hazardous attitude by the FAA . . .

I'll probably be driving out from Fresno in my AWD Suby. I can shuttle a few people and skis from place to place. And even though I have AWD, I'll have chains at the ready as well.

Anyone know what kind of drive I'm lookin' at from FAT to SLC in the winter? I really don't want to get a plane ticket and rental car . . . But I'm coming one way or another!
