Default Germany - Oktoberfest Sept 24-30 2006

so far, i know 2 others who will be in Munich/somewhere germany during the week of Sept 24-30

Is anyone else planning on being over there for oktoberfest and do we want to start the first (maybe only) NetworkJC German Style Fest this year??

We haven't decided our plans thus far, but we think we want to travel around germany going to the various oktoberfest festivals.. with of course, a stop in Munich. Is anyone planning on going to a particular tent in Munich because from what i understand - it's important to plan that as early as you can.

I do want to plan a trip back down the rhine river (staying in Mainz or Wiesbaden) because I need to have some wine shipping back home from my ancestry home town.

ideas/thoughts/anyone else wanna come with or meet us over there?

I'll be in Munich from Sept. 22nd until Oct. 1st. As far as tents go there really isn't much planning that is needed. If you get there early on a weekday gettting a seat will not be a problem even for a group. By early I mean noon or 1PM....any later and it gets harder to sit together. Weekends are pretty much a waste of time for a group of more than 3 or 4 people because of how busy it gets.

ok, so here's kindof a stupid question.. how do the bathrooms work out when your in the tents? are they in the tents or do you have to do like here in the US and go find yourself a portapotty?

Each tent has restroom facilities so you don't have to run around to find a bathroom.

There isn't much sitting going on at the tents past 3 or 4 in the afternoon....everyone is pretty much drunk and standing on the benches the entire time. Depends on the tent of course but for the most part the later in the night you go the more people standing.

wow... that's interesting!!! so what all do you do when you go to germany? just oktoberfest or other beer gartens?

also, what section of town are you staying in? we're gonna try and find hotel this weekend (if the crew hotel doesn't work out). but i'm thinking we might have to stay out of town (maybe stuttgart?) and train it in as day trips.

of course, i still want to travel around that week.. it'd be awesome to go down to fussen again and have a beer (vs going to the castle like all the other tourists).

Since this is our 7th year of going to Oktoberfest and Germany.....we've hit most of the sights in and around Munich and southern Germany. So most of our activities are in Munich. There are plenty of brewery tours, bier gardens, and other fun stuff to do in Munich to keep up entertained. We do hit the fest a lot thuogh! It's still probably the funnest thing I've ever been too. Even after going for 7 years. You meet some of the coolest people from all over the world and get to drink some awesome beer.

If you plan on seeing Munich I would recommend staying in the Munich area if at all possible. Even if it's on the outskirts of the city. Taking a train to and from Stuttgart just for the day gets a little old. We did that for a couple of years. The last few trains out of the city are packed with drunks and the train is packed to the gills with people. Not fun for a 3 hours ride! Plus the last train leaves I think around 10:30PM so you miss some of the Munich nightlife.

I'll be staying at my friends flat which is right near the downtown area. There are plenty of fun things to do in the city. If you'll be around the city for a few days we could plan on hitting up the fest, going to a bier garden in the suburbs to see how everyday Germans live, taking a brewery tour, walking around Marienplatz, have a beer at the Hofbrau Haus and have a BBQ down on the banks of the Isar river which is where a lot of Germans go at meet their friends. Very fun...carry your case of beer, put it into the river to keep it cold and fire up the BBQ!

Good times! If you guys have any other questions about Munich or Stuttgart let me know! Hopefully we can find time to meet up and drink a few beers! Would be glad to show you around the city if our schedules work out!

so, it looks like we're going to make stuttgart our "home base" for the week since it's only 2 hrs between there and munich and frankfurt (opposite direction). we're also thinking of hitting salzburg and/or Basel since it'll be included in our german rail pass.

WCP - are you planning on any other extracurricular activities besides oktoberfest?

I wouldn't mind going up to Fussen (i dunno how to create the umlaut) for a beer (been to the castle, don't need to do that again!) maybe Nurmberg or down into the black forest since we haven't been in that direction either.

OK, now who's all going to be in Germany and where so I can keep a mental picture of it.

We're going to "hub" Stuttgart and day trip around the country so if you want to share a ice cold bevvy with the wife and I, either send me a PM, email or post here about where you are so I can make a chart of places we need to hit.
