www.abc4.com "A flying lesson nearly had a tragic ending late Tuesday afternoon over the West Desert in Tooele County. A flight instructor and student pilot aboard a single engine plane set it safely down near the Morton Salt plant on the south shore of the Great Salt Lake, less than a mile away from Interstate 80. The two were in the midst of a flying lesson when the throttle control linkage broke, leaving them unable to keep the engine running at a higher speed. The pair looked at a number of potential landing sites and ultimately decided on a wide open patch of hard-packed desert. They were able to land the plane safely, and both walked away from the site without a scratch. The incident is under investigation" The student took it quite well

| I wish; no profound insights just yet. I’m letting it all sink in, I can't believe it actually happened. Turns out landing the beast was only half the battle. Where I put her down was almost impossible to access, we sat there for a little over two and a half hour watching news helicopters circle around us, and I will remember to bring sun screen next flight. To add to the whole thing, not even a week ago I had an oil pressure sending unit fail which caused us to lose almost all of our oil in flight. I didn’t learn about that one until I was on the ground. But these are good training aircraft, with a good record of safety for the several thousands of hours we have flown our fleet of 10.

| Did it feel surreal when it was happening or was it like all the times you've practiced emergency procedures? At any rate making an off field landing without any injuries or damage to the plane is the best outcome you can hope for.

| jdflight's out for dinner, says he's sick; I'm requiring a doctor's note. If we don't hear from pilot602, I guess we'll do it another time when more people can make it--and aren't busy with emergency landings.... ![]()

| B: I've gotta ask is that an Alarus? If so what's the tail number? We have two of those planes that we do training in here in SC. It's a funky little plane. Glad you guys were okay. We had an oil cooler blow in one with one of our new instructors about two years ago. Made a mess in the plane but they were able to land safely and no major damage done. |

Ya it is an Alarus CH2000. Where do you instruct? I didn't know that there was any other flight schools using them in SLC.
