Ian, Do the interview, let them make an offer, then make a decision whether or not you take it. Its one of the best flying gigs out there, you get paid whether you fly or not and no furloughs.

Any questions about stations let me know, if I don't know the scoop, I can get it.

Bill

I appreciate that Bill - and that's excellent advice, but no can do. I made a commitment to myself for this new career, just moved, and just bought a house. Plus, I still just believe flying for living just isn't for me. Six months ago I would have been all over this job, but it's too late now.

Thanks man... as for the city, Sierra Vista, AZ, I think. Yes, I am prior military - former Army helicopter pilot.

I was actually on the Border Patrol side (prior to CBP), my military time was mostly spent jumping out the back of airplanes. I went from the patrol to the Air Marshal Program just after 9-11.

The government joined the two air operation programs when Homeland Security was formed, much to the chagrin of most of the Border Patrol Air OPs. Now its known as Customs and Border Protection Air Ops.

Hindsight being 20/20 I should have stayed where I was at, but patriotism won out, after that I took what I was dealt. I retired earlier this year after 28 years.

If you're working border stations you'll be flying 182s 206s, MD-500s and blackhawks. The interior stations and some of the northern border stations have PC-12s, Blackhawks and slowtations. I think they still have some old king airs, and A-stars floating around as well. They also have P-3s with E-2C radomes on them but thats mostly down in Florida and points south.

Do you have to have prior heli time to go for a heli posistion? Or, what if you get on as a fixed wing pilot. How difficult is it to switch airframes from fixed to rotary? Will they pay for you to get your heli rating?

I'm sure that rotorwing rating and experience are looked at much more than just fixed wing. I have heard that they now train you in up to five airframes. I don't know that for sure though. Nowadays, it probably depends on what they have at your station.

Yes, once you work for them all additional ratings and types are paid for.

Getting back to the job discussion, this question is for Bill Ervin. How does the feds get away with the minimum age crap? Age Employment Discrimination Act (AEDA) of 1967 along with the 14th amendment clearly states that age discimination is AGAINST THE LAW. So why the minimum age of 37? Oh sorry they changed it to 40 how nice. Still is age discrimination

The original law was directed towards Federal Law Enforcement and Firefighters only. They have since added most, but not all, gun carrying folks connected to Law Enforcement. The law was written so you wouldn't have 60 or 70 year old cops and firefighters. It has been challenged in the courts, several times actually, and the challenges have yet to be successful, and honestly I was tired when I hit 50. 26 years of working 10, 12 or more hours a day, 5-6 or 7 days a week sometime several weeks at a time. I'm not saying everybody does that, nor am I complaining, but that was my life. Most Fed LE types are ready to go sometime shortly after 50.
Then we go out and do contract work and make real money

I'm not saying its right, and If you are on the other end and are too old to get hired, that sucks, but the law still stands after several challenges. If you have the means to challenge it, go for it.

I was told recently that a 60 year old in California challenged the local police on that one and won. The key hereis in individual abilities not in a law covering everyone. Sure there are some 50+ old cops that shouldnt be in the force cause of their weight or inability to qualify physically but there are also some 30 years olds in the same boat.

That is the essence of discrimination. Anoverall barring of individuals based on a specific difference without merit. In this case age.

Just curious did anyone apply before the Oct. 31st cutoff? With what Ian said I'm hoping to get a call towards the end of January. I guess my main concern is though with the economy and the new years budget how many people will they be hiring.

Hey Gideon, whats up? I suspect the new prez will freeze hiring as soon as he comes into office. Thats the word on the street anyway.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news

See Bill man that's what I didn't want to hear, my Pops was telling me something similiar but it was all circulating around the budget. It sucks to be done and have nothing to do. Maybe I will travel around - maybe take that snowboarding trip I was going to cancel this year.

I just don't want to start putting in resumes for other jobs and this pop up because I would rather have this job.

Just keep your options open, I don't think anyone would fault you for leaving if you got the call for a gov't flying job. Especially if you're going to a much better paying job

Its amazing how many times in my government career I've put in for something and thought it was canceled or someone else got it, then boom the phone rings and they ask, can you be here next week!!!!

Keep the faith Bro

Thanks man, same to you. I think if I don't hear anything from them I'm headed out to the heli-expo to see if I can snag some kind of work....I would hate to have to join the nasty guard just to get more flight time but right now I'm considering everything.

March 4th interview. Lots of chatter indicates that recent offers have been for UAVs. However, those "in the know" also claim that you're still an AIA and therefore will be kept CURRENT in an aircraft as well. Whether that means 3 bounces every 90 days or a good deal of flying is unknown to me.
