CFI Position in Addison (Dallas) Texas

I'm billing quite a bit more per month.... but I also gotta run the office here, and most of my money comes from me flying as a freelance mei.

I've got several ex-students of mine that are/have been working there at the ADS location - and the biggest complaint is the low pay, and working the desk for free.

Oh and ADS is an awesome airport... Stephanie in the tower makes my day... woman has a lot of energy hehe...

How does the desk deal work? Do they require you to work the desk certain amount of hours per week or do they just call you when they have an opening in the schedule? What if you don't have time to work the schedule?

Are they currently hiring any part-timers at the ADS location?

The desk shifts are scheduled a month in advance. Since now the owner's nephew works during the week and a girl works during the weekends we only get scheduled for opening and closing shifts. If you can't work one of the desk shifts then you can find an instructor to switch shifts with. We do that regularly.

I'm a part timer and a couple other guys are as well. How available would you be? Send in your resume, or better call and talk to Dick Kirby. Are you a CFI-I? We really need those right now.

I'm demonstrating tremendous restraint regarding this company, so I'll just write this and stop myself.

I dropped my resume off there once. The place at first seemed great until I was told that I was expected to work the desk for free. Then I knew that Monarch was NOT the kind of place where I wanted to be working.

Why? Because I belive that an employer should have a basic understanding of payment in exchange for goods and services, or in other words, Capitalism 101. Working the front desk and not compensating the employee is a total and complete slap in the face AND illegal. We're supposed to be....what? Grateful to fly there? $#!@ 'em!!

It appears to me that the management belives in exploiting thier employees. This type of crap happend back in 2001-2003 when it was hard as hell to get a job flying anything. It sure as $#@$ shouldn't be happening now. Time for Monarch management to wake up and show a little respect, and HIRE A RECEPTIONIST YOU CHEAP #$@$@HOLES!!!!! And to the instructors of Monarch...shame on you for accepting this insult.

I'd rather throw my licence in to my fireplace than work there.

Sure, flying the desk for free sucks as does not getting paid for discovery flights but that is where much of the bad side of things end. Oh, and did I mention they have recently hired a girl to work the desk on weekends? With the latest pay increase making money is very easy. At Monarch we typically bill the entire block for instructor time. So a two hour block you bill as 2 hours for the instructor, then whatever the hobbs time was for the plane. That means that if you fly 5 flights a day at 5 days a week-which is half of what you could fly if you were up for it- you would be billing 50 hours a week. Thats 120 hours a month X $22/hour and you are making $2600 a month.

A full time instructor averages roughly those numbers. I am part time and bill anywhere from 50 to 80 hours a month...PART TIME. And the 2 hour blocks we bill include pre and post flight trainig, so don't think we are talking on our cell phones and watching youtube videos while our students pre-flight and still charging the entire 2 hour block.

You make your own schedule, minus the desk shifts and are free to do basically what you want when it comes to who you fly with and when. Management largely stays out of the day to day flight school operations, which is good since the father/son owners can be a pain in the ass sometimes. However our cheif pilot, Dick Kirby is the best person I have met in the world and is truely looking out for the CFI's best interest.

On top of all that, our MX is world class, our fleet is among the newest in the entire region, we have the largest fleet of G-1000 aircraft and a HUGE student base which keeps us all busy, even more busy than we would like at times. Plus KADS is a class airport with great controllers and Regional Approach directing all inbound traffic. The fact that we are a single runway airport is sometimes bad when traffic is busy, typically on Friday afternoons and evenings, and when the winds are outside the plane's limits keeping us on the ground since there is no intersecting runway.

But other than the few negatives I mentioned above it is all positive at Monarch. I breifly trained and was offered a CFI position with a rather large flight school out of KGKY and let me just say that I am glad I didn't go work out there. Monarch is light years ahead in many ways, and a number of CFIs with experience at that school agree that Monarch is the place to be.

If anybody thinks they are going to be rich as a CFI then you are seriously in denial. But then again if you think that making anywhere from 1200 to over 2000 a month as a CFI is low then by all means show us where you can make more.

I don't know...My Instructor up in Tulsa bills out @ $40/hr. He averages about 100 hrs a month between flight and ground instruction. He's good, honest and an effective instructor. He got me through my PPL in 44.6 hrs. Not to mention that he rounds his billed time down.

If both parties are willing to agree to it, I don't have a problem with it. Nobody is forcing them to work there, and obviously, there are people who like working there. I think rounding up and charging for the whole block pretty much covers the two hours of desk work that is required.
