Default CFI and 135 position in rurual VA

I got a call from my old boss the other day to see if he sould go ahead and fill the position I left. He asked me to advertise an opening for a CFI/135 position.

Having worked for him for a total of a year or so, I can't say that its the greatest job, but it will DEFINITLEY get you a good start. I flew just under 400 hours in about 8 months after graduating from college, with 3 big ferry trips of airplanes he had bought and sold. The company, called Hummel Aviation is a full service FBO located at Hummel Field (W75) in Topping, VA. The flight school operates a 152 and 172. The 172 is IFR equipped. The 135 side of it operates a 182RG and a T310Q with a Garmin 430 and autopilot. There are talks of a 421, if one of their big clients will agree to charter it so many hours per month. The boss' specific words were "we need to find someone to put in that 310", since the chief pilot (retired SWA capt.) is looking to retire for good.

If anyone is interested, feel free to IM or PM me. I'd be willing to talk on the phone about it as well.

if I can throw in my 2 cents--- I agree and think that a job like this is a great place to get started-- a flight school that has legit 135 (not 134 and a 1/2) on the side was something I was looking for all over the place. It allows you to build great skills as a CFI and also learn a lot about 135ops including the maintenance side of 91/135. I'm guessing you instruct until you hit the 135mins? or can you log SIC time if you're under?

Good luck-
JM

Yes, thats what I did. When I began, they didn't have the 310 on the 135 yet. I instructed, got to the 500 hour mark and then got checked out for 135 VFR in the 182RG. In the mean time, the chief pilot and I worked on the manuals to add the 310, and once that was done, he took care of the training manual to allow SIC in the 310. You can legally log SIC if you meet the requirements of 135.245 and you have gone through the training program. They will be more than happy to help you get your multi if you don't already have it. Just a word to the wise though...bring your A game for the 310. Its a 2270x45 foot strip.

To add to the part I mentioned about ferrying airplanes. Its not all that common, but when it does happen, they're some awesome trips. I flew a 152 from San Diego to Hummel last summer, an Ercoupe from Hummel to the Fort Worth area AND back this past fall, and then again down to Gainesville, FL (trip to FTW was a busted sale). Most recently I took a 172 from up near Frederick, MD to Dothan, AL.
