Default Barr Air - Mesquite, TX

Does anyone have any information about Barr Air in HQZ? Anyone heard anything good/bad about them? From what I know they fly a pipeline from East Texas to Houston. Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Anyone know anyone that's worked there that might know about the mx on the planes? It's more or less right around the corner from me right now, and I like to keep all options open.

I just gave them a call and they are looking for a pilot, but you have to have 1200hrs total time. I think you have to meet the 135 IFR minimums.

I'm glad you called...you saved me the drive out there!

Anyone know if most pipeline patrol companys require 1200 hours? Seems kinda steep, especially for VFR. I'm guessing insurance has nothing to do with it...

The guy said that the 1200TT minumum was required by the company that they patrol for.

I should be able to offer some information about Barr as I just left them only 2 months ago.

Aircraft are 182's. And they are kept in good working order. The mechanics do their very best to give you a good airplane. But I did have one engine pop on me and some other more minor stuff in the 6 months I worked there.
Routes are all over Texas, but there are routes that run you into far North East as well.
You can expect 20-25 hours a week. Depending on your route.
There min's for pilots are set by the contracts they work for. So 1200 is the number. But that is only applied to the pilot flying over the line.
They do employ observers. And they can fly on any dead head. And there are plenty of those. Sometimes a dead head can be 2 hours or more. All you need is a private rating for that. Unless you have some serious time they would be more likely to hire an observer and let you share flying the airplane than hire you in as a pilot. The pilots at Barr have some VERY high times and experience. I think the low timer there has 15,000 hours of pipeline exp but most of the guys are around the 30,000 hour plus range.

All in all, very cool bunch of people out there. The commute was what killed it for me. I was driving from Ft. Worth. I was just spending to much time on the road. If it were not for that I would still be there. It really was a great place to work.

Make sure you have a very strong stomach if you try for any pipeline gig. Your low, in all the bumps, and whippin some 90 degree banks regularly. It's good times.

You should look into Texas Areal Inspection at Northwest Regional. I think there higher more around the 500 hour range. And they would be much closer to Denton. Their hanger in in the far Northwest corner. There is a big sign on the hanger. You can't miss it.

Thanks KLB,

I've been troll for over a year now. I just figured I could offer something on this topic that may help some people out.

Shack,
How's the observer thing work? Any minimum flight times? Is it actual employment or more of an "internship" type thing?

Your an actual employee. The pay is between 325 and 400 per week. 325 if you just have a private rating and 400 if you have a CSEL.
My budddy that works as an observer has been there for about 6 months and they said if he had his commercial ticket they would have hired him on as a pilot with a waiver because he knew all the routes. But he's a 800 hour PPL guy. So in the right seat he stays.
If you want some mad single engine time just to bump the TT then go for it.
Pipeline is a great opportunity for low time guys to get a bump in the TT area. But you wouldn't want to spend to much time there or you'll get pigeon holed to single engine VFR for a long time.

I dropped my resume with Cort yesterday. He didn't have much to say, but said he'd keep it on file and let me know if/when they needed someone.
