I lived in Singapore growing up (11th grade, dad is in the oil industry), and its a great place to live. Very large American/International community with an excellent American school, and almost no crime so families are very safe. It is however a "benevolent dictatorship" so what the government says goes, the democratic process there is a joke, but the country is (at least now) very well run.

I don't understand how they list positions such as "777 Captain". Why don't they just upgrade a 777 FO in the position?

Many different reasons, perhaps the F/O's are locked into the right seat for a set number of years, looking for experienced Captains to train the low time F/O's, easier to find Captains.

Most of SIA FO's are employed as cadets. They do most of their flying training in Perth, Western Australia, then head back to Singapore to jump into a window seat on one of their many heavies - with less than 500hrs total time. Most of their cadets are Singaporean, although I heard they advertised in India recently. So, many of the FOs take quite a while to qualify for a command with the hour and sector requirements SIA have in place. |
