Default For those that have interview experience..

What types of medical questions come up during the interview? The reason I ask is because I was medically discharged from the Army due to some issues that came up in Iraq. I went to an AME, and he cleared me with a first class medical -saying there are different standards than in the military. Anyway, do you all, who have interview exp., think med. discharge (although honorable) would hinder me from getting hired on? Thanks for the insight in advance...

Doubt it. I'm no expert, but it would seem that you should have legal recourse if somebody refused you with a first class medical. Good luck with the job hunt.

No problem. Personally, (again, I'm no expert) I would think that any medical questions are off limits, unless the company sends you for a medical (Delta). In that case, I think Doug would be able to help you out. In my experience at 3 airlines and one 135, I have never been asked a medical question on an interview. Again, good luck with the job hunt and thanks for your service.

Not true. Airlines are one of the few industries exempt from most of the American's with disabilities act, and other similar discrimination laws. American Eagle used to be extremely strict on medicals, they previously put everyone thru a 1 day medical exam.

I'm calling you on that one. Please provide some legitimate information to back that statement up.

I have nothing to backup what I say, but I have seen (wish I could remember where, perhaps an interview thread here) where the medical process for american was pretty intense. like you would be at a great benefit with lower cholestrol etc.

I have no idea about the ADA, but Eagle used to send a lot of people home for medical reasons. Three out of the five I interviewed with who passed the sim and technical were disqualified on the medical. I know of a couple more who had to get a private neuropsychologist to run some expensive tests because they hadn't passed Eagle's bizarre computer-based cognitive test.

But they're so short pilots, I doubt they do that anymore.

It's not so much that airlines are exempt from the ADA, but that in most cases, the ADA just doesn't apply!

Here is an example!

BTW, I'm a disabled veteran. Hasn't given me any problems. Now, I don't walk around with a hat that says "Disabled Veteran" at the airport . . . lol.

I would like to see a written law that exempts airlines from the ADA. What they get away with is entirely different.

I could be wrong but the way I understand it, they are only allowed to require a first calss medical prior to offering employment. They can not make hiring decisions bassed on medical issues if the candidate does hold a first class medical. They can however, make a conditional offer of employment pending results of their own medical exam, but that exam can not be conducted until the after conditional offer of employment has been given.
