Default Silver State

Here is a video that was on our local news. I feel bad for these students.

I just love how when a school decides to close the doors they don't say ##### to anyone. They just try to collect as much money in loans as possible then the only time students find out the school is dead is when there are chains on the door. Something must be done to protect the customer in this situation.

especially when the owner is a millionaire. its one thing if this guy is filing for bankruptcy protection himself when he closes the doors, but i have a problem with a guy closing the doors, and screwing folks when he's sitting on a pile of cash. if the business is losing money, then stop accepting new students, but let the ones who have paid, get what they paid for.

This has to be illegal. How much money did these SOBs take KNOWING they were going to shut down within a couple of weeks?

A lot. . .but not all. More of a reason to perform your due diligence before enrolling in the school. It's not as if Silver State isn't without controversy, so it's even more of a reason to go elsewhere if there's even a hint I can lose a significant amount of money with no return on investment.

Sorry to hear about this.

Technically, it is illegal, but there isn't much that can be done.

There is an attorney that is trying to prove bankruptcy fraud to stop the chap 7 proceedings. There seems to be some suspicious activity with student accounts right before they filed. All I know is the UT div of consumer protection has been going through all our files. The only thing they found is that I make great coffee.

Interesting. So, help me here. What is the "flood" of CFIs actually going to do to the market? Others I believe can attain their additional certificates even though it'll cost them much more money (provided they're able to attain the appropriate loans)

I'm living in Texas. Everyone's heard of ENRON. Perhaps a class action suit can help recoup many of these students' loans. After all, there are plenty of helicopters and real estate available for auction/resale.

The supposed flood of CFI's has not really affected much I was looking at a forum where the SSH instructors were complaing that they can't get a job because they came from SSH. Employers are being up front and honest about it. Most of them are CFI my company will not even look at your resume unless you are a II. That seems to be the trend these days. As far as the students go I am not sure they can get financed for anything else. We had a few try with us and were denied at every lender we tried for them. Maybe Pilot Finance will make a resurgence since Sallie Mae tightened up its lending standards.

Excellent point; even down here, given the offshore activities, being instrument rated is mandatory/required, so being a CFII is a plus. Heck, it should be easy to get for many of the CFIs if they buckle down. Hey, no job is guaranteed if you're not continuing to enhance your resume. . .and you don't do that simply by building time.

I have learned more in the last two months of being an instructor than I did the entire time I was a student. I spent 4 hrs today in the AIM looking at the ILS. Which lead to LDA which lead to SDF and so on. I love having students that push to know more than the average pilot. Being a CFII does have its frustrations but it is making me become a better pilot.

Thankfully, the helicopter world doesn't tend to embrace the 300 wonders or transition courses. Mostly I think because most helicopter flying is single pilot.

One of these days Shane, you're going to have to help me get all my CFI-H add-ons. Oh, wait - you fly Robbies, right? Well, give me a call when you instruct in Schweitzers.

(I kid! Sort of - I wouldn't want to have to comply with those Robbie SFARs, that's for sure!)

Don't worry one day you will be man enugh to fly the Robbie. I will then teach you all its secrets. Besides flying them makes you a great high DA pilot. Imagine a takeoff where you hover at max power. Can wait till summer and the nice 8,000 ft DA days.
Shane

PA +/-temp(standard)*117= I don't have enough power to hover

Done plenty of them!

Heck, I've attempted takeoffs where I couldn't get above a foot with full power and had to boot some troopies out to get to a 10 foot hover.

Thats gotta suck for them. "I need a volunteer to stay in the hot LZ for weight restrictions. Any one who volunteers gets a meal voucher for another MRE. And Standby on the next 47 at 6:30"
