| Senior Member | Just wondering if it is a good thing to have a college degree, or has this issue within companies more or less faded over the years? I've seen some companies who would like a pilot to have his/her degree, and others make no mention of it. I'm asking also because I am currently in college, but I will probably be on my way with a career track in helicopters within a month. Four years at my university is about 70-80K, and helicopter training is going to run me 55-60K, that's a whole lot of money to payback. So, just wondering what you know about this issue. Thanks for the help. |

| There may come a day when you can't or won't want to fly for a living. What will you do if that day comes? Get an education. |

| Get your education. I have yet to meet anyone who says that they wished they never got their college degree. Sure its alot of work, but once you have it they can't take it away. Unlike your ratings which(heaven forbid) could be worth nothing if you fail a medical, FAA action, or something goes awry... And if one day you decide you've had enough flying for this lifetime you could move onto some other job, which more than likely will require more than a GED if you want to make a liveable wage. Good luck whatever decision you decide! |

| If you want to keep your education costs down, why are you going to a school with tuition so high? I'm guessing it's a private school, so I'd advise transferring to a state university. It'll be at least half as much and you'll get just as good of an education. |

| Senior Member | what happens if you get poked in the eye and go blind in that eye? you can't fly... do you want to be working at mcdonalds forever... no... just spend the extra money for the education. i am in the same situation but i realized so many things can happen that will keep me from flying, therefore, i need a backup. you should too. |

| Senior Member | I agree 100% with everyones opinions about getting a degree. Also, yeah I do attend a private university. I've jumped from college to college and I decided I just needed to stay in one spot. When credits get denied because it doesn't meet their criteria, it's a waste. So I probably won't transfer. I guess I should have worded the post a little better. I was really concerned with companies hiring pilots, and if the whole needing a college degree requirement has diminished from what it used to be. "do you want to be working at mcdonalds forever" Scary thought....lol. That would motivate anyone to go to college and get their degree. Thanks everyone. I appreciate your opinions. ![]() |
