For an instrument airplane rating under part 61 how many hours in an FTD may be counted towards the 40 hours actual/simulated instrument time? 14 CFR 61.65 (1) A maximum of 30 hours may be performed in that flight simulator or flight training device if the instrument time was completed in accordance with part 142 of this chapter; or (2) A maximum of 20 hours may be performed in that flight simulator or flight training device if the instrument time was not completed in accordance with part 142 of this chapter. However it also states under 14 CFR 61.65 (g) Use of flight simulators or flight training devices. If the instrument time was provided by an authorized instructor in a flight simulator or flight training device— (3) No more than 10 hours of instrument time in a flight simulator or flight training device was credited for the instrument time requirements of this section; Now correct me if i'm wrong, but part 142 is in regards to certification of simulators, and not the applicable use of the sim for 141 vs. 61. |

You'll have to look at the certificate that accompanies the FTD you have. My school has a PCATD and our certificate authorizes 2.5 hrs toward private pilot training.

I think the PCATD I used was good for up to 10 hours of the required 40-hours of instrument time for the instrument rating. I only used it for 2.0, though.

The PCATD that we use is only good for 10hrs towards the instrument rating.

It depends if the device is certified as a PCATD, FTD, or AATD. I'm not near my FAR/AIM right now so I can't verify the numbers, but the device should have a letter of authorization dictating what ratings its time can be used toward and in what quantities.

It is basically for advanced training in approved programs with approved sims. Like 141 is an outline of regs to create and get approved programs for pilot certification with airplanes, and some sim time, 142 is an outline of regs to create and get approved programs for advanced training with mostly sims and maybe an airplane. | |
