Default Ameriflight Birdstrike @ Show Low-Pilot Injured

Plane lands near Show Low after bird strike

by Tessa Muggeridge - Nov. 5, 2009 12:18 PM
The Arizona Republic

A twin-engine cargo plane landed safely near Show Low after striking one or more birds on Wednesday, federal officials said, the second bird strike to force a commercial plane to land this week...

The pilot, who was the only person on board the Ameriflight Beechcraft C99, was taken to a local hospital where he received eight stitches in his face, said John Hazlet, director of operations and vice president of safety and standards at Ameriflight...

The bird's impact knocked the headset and glasses off of pilot Roger Wutke, Hazlet said, but because of the nature of the hole and where Wutke was sitting, the wind didn't affect his ability to land the plane.

Wow. Not good.

KSOW, back in my cargo days, was where I almost ran my plane off the runway after not being able to stop on the ice / snow runway when coming in during a snowfall.

I'm surprised Hazlet bothered to comment, or that the story hit the press at all!

Well, he got the Show Low boxes where they were going, but I did hear that UPS was asking about the Holbrook work, and why they wouldn't end up in Holbrook...

When did you fly to Show Low? I used to fly there in 98-99 then I flew the King Air 200 there in 2000-2001 for Sunrise Airlines.

Flew cargo for Scenic/Skywest in '95-'97, my second cargo job. Had the PHX-SOW-P14 run for UPS.

I also did the same run for UPS. Used to spend my days at the Holbrook golf course and trying to pet Bear. He never let me though.

Was at Holbrook airport lounging around at my plane and witnessed this accident as it happened. Watched the Bonanza taxi and begin takeoff roll, heard a loud bang and an engine racing to high RPMs, then impact noise. Got to the aircraft just as it stopped upside down:

"liberating the propeller blades as the aircraft was taking off."

That's one way of putting it! Must have been interesting to see, no doubt.

It's been years since I have been to P14. I am sure Jack is no longer there. It was really a place stuck in the past.

Oh definitely it was. Had that old feel to it. Was cool that MTRs IR 320 and 112 ran by a few miles away from the airport, so you'd see F-111s, etc tooling by the airport low-level and fast.

I'm glad he's safe! AMF incidents usually go unoticed by design. Wutke will probably get a free tshirt. I wonder what kind of strange PIF will come out because of this?

Interesting choice of words for the NTSB

The OP accident is pretty crazy as well. Glad to see it was just couple of stiches. That windshield looks pretty bad

ours are white. Unless amflight opted for the 'vermillion trim' option, that's blood. God, I hate the 99.
