Me and BDHill could never seem to get a long on this site, but damn I still respected him as a pilot. He seemed to really know his stuff as a flight instructor and was leap and bounds more experienced then I. It just goes to show you how the worst can happen to some of the best. I'm really feeling for the family right now. He is leaving behind two beautiful kids and a wife, and that is just making me sick to my stomach. Let me know when you find something or create a fund Doug.

RIP fellow Aviator...as said before hopefully you're enjoying all the pie, beer, and fishing you could ever want.

Right after John got furloughed Ben was there helping him out, trying to hook him up with students, get his BFR done etc. Just the kind of guy he was...always looking out for other people

While I urge everyone to resist the temptation to Monday-morning-quarterback the accident, I recognize that trying to understand what happened can be helpful both in coping and learning from it. With that in mind, here's a comment from a student pilot who witnessed it:

My instructor and I were the first to get to him (by helicopter). We heard him make his emergency radio calls. He said he was to high and that he needed to loose altitude to land runway 36. He must have miss judged the headwind. He had already passed away when we found him.

All you can ever do is eye ball it when you're gliding for a runway. Anybody could miss judge it and end up short or long.

It's just the game.

Never met the dude, but after reading this whole thread the bad feeling in the bottom of my stomach won't go away. Sounds like he was a really good guy. My heart really goes out to his family.

Interesting and sobering observation from the student pilot quote you posted. The only personal experience I can add from having a fair amount of T-210 time is that when power is lost, the thing drops nearly like a rock. Practicing forced landings from the pattern, even turning towards the runway abeam the approach end, it was coming down quick.

Too high??? Too high for a 6,600 foot long runway, and then come up short??? Aaarrrgghh....it makes me angry. Not angry at BDHill...angry at the way life goes. Angry that for some reason, something which should have been survivable, wasn't. Angry that there's no way to un-do whatever mistake was made. Angry that it's so permanent.

Sounds like the same the old famous C210 problem so far. The same issue and aircraft that put me in a canal with the gear up 4 years ago. The same issue we debated! I say no more and I will continue respect him.

I never met Mr. Hill, but from the posts I've seen on JC he seems like a great guy. This kind of hits home for me as I've never lost anybody I know to an aviation accident. May he rest in peace! My condolences to his family. See ya later bud.

Indeed. I have the kind of anger one gets after making a mistake with something you know you could have done better at. The kind of anger that ticks you off in the moment, but ultimately makes you improve for the future. I only wish BDHill was still around to improve from it as well.

As with any accident, all we can do is learn and keep going.
