Default Delta aircraft catches fire...

Just heard it live on the news. The aircraft appears to be a MD-88/90. It happened in DC, this isn't Doug's airplane is it?

Allright. Just checking Just so this post doesn't go to waste... If I go to Embry to get a masters in aeronautical engineering, could I also get some flight instrunction from them? Also, what can I do at my high school to get a scholarship at embry?

Remember we've got 120 -88's 16 -90's and probably 2,000 pilots on the equipment and I still can't find a reference to the incident anwhere.

Well, I don't know Brian.

I haven't been to ERAU since 1993 and I'm not sure if it's possible to be in one degree program but still undergo ERAU flight training simultaneously. A good question and I think it'd be better to study engineering with a flight option rather than outright aeronautical science.

And I really don't know what the scholarship options are for Embry-Riddle but perhaps someone reading the thread might see and chime in if they know something.

I'm not the guru atop the mountain, but this is actually more of a crowded atrium where someone eavesdropping on the public conversation may have something the interject but you asked me the question directly, I told you I didn't know but maybe someone else does.

Gotta be patient my friend!

well, I am attending Riddle (DAB) in the fall for their Aeronautical Engineering program. Good luck on getting scholarships from them...they tend to be rather stingy with their money so I hear ( I got about 9000 dollars from them which is actually considered high). As for the flying, I would suggest flying outside of Riddle. It would be a much cheaper option.

Thanks. ILSstud, I emailed you. Doug, I understand what you mean. Thanks for the link. It appears that there was also an emergency aboard an american flight this afternoon.

Well, not all that crazy!

There are a zillion things that occur at any airline on a daily basis, but only some hit the media. Usually once something hits the media, no matter how big or how small, they usually put the only available reporter on it, which usually have no aviation experience and it gets often misreported.

It could have been something as simple as a fire loop breaking which necessitated a return to the gate and then someone hopped on their cellphone and told the news, "We've got a fire!"

I really don't have any access to 'breaking news' that an average Joe with an internet connection doesn't already have.

"Can you please delete it?"

You know you can delete any post that you start by going to edit post and then delete.

Now....if I could only figure out a way to ignore (not have to see) Aloft's posts...Jetcareers would be a perfect place.

First, it's referred to as "Riddle". No one calls it "Embry"...

Well, you have to get your bachelors in aeronautical engineering first before you get your master's degree. I say that, because when you go for your master's, it is assumed you have mastered all of the basic engineering skills required. If you were thinking of doing aeronautical science and then trying to get a master's degree, it's not going to happen.

As for flying on the side, with a degree in engineering you won't have time to get instuction from them on the side. That was my intention when I went to Riddle, but very quickly I realized I had to pick one or the other, and I chose engineering.

Example: You have to have four hour plus blocks of time available for flying, and you have 3 hour lab classes AND you are constantly doing homework and studying. It's nearly impossible to do both.

Also, flying at Riddle is VERY expensive. If you want to do it, fly on the side at a local school.

The very few guys I know who did it did engineering during the year and flew during the summers.

It's not impossible, but it will burn you out VERY fast.

I can tell you that a lot of times, various airlines have situations where the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. I was recently working with one where one person said there was no way in hell they'd do any advertising, since the money was so tight, and then someone else from the same airline in the same department said of course we're in, let me get you the paperwork.

Now, if that's folks sitting on the same floor, probably no more than a few cubes away from each other, doing that, when you've got thousands of pilots flying hundreds of airplanes, it's no surprise that Doug finds out about stuff later than we do.
