For food, I'd say "hot dogs" ... but then you'd come back with the same claim to fame.

There's really not much to do. I'd definitely go along the "magnificent mile" (basically a good 10 blocks of stores that the farmers come to shopt at). Theres also the Museum of Science and Industry which I didn't find all that amusing (although the German U Boat is cool).

Otherwise, enjoy your time! It truly is a beautiful city, right on the lake.

Btw, I'm actually from Washington DC, but am pretty close to Chicago and my family is from there.

Cheers,

well, yeah.. the italians did invent pizza.. but chicago took that and made it it's own masterpiece...

one place i'd suggest is the museum of science and the submarine parked out front (on the lake)... the museum from what i recall is hands on and a total blast!

The boat isnt parked out front anymore. The museum built a new place for it inside to help keep it well maintained. It got a beating outside for so long. In high school a group I was in did some restoration stuff on it for som volunteer hours. Cool experience for sure becuase we got to go in sections and play with stuff you dont normally get to on the tour. If you are looking for something to do a lot of it depends on what you are interested in...and where in the city you will actually be.

The submarine is closed for renovations. I am not to sure when it will open back up. You haven't had real pizza until you have tried Chicago deep crust pizza.

Don't knock Chicago pizza man! When I was based in NY my crash pad was in Queens (Kew Gardens) and I had real New York pizza many times. It was really yummy, and I have nothing bad to say about NY pizza, but you really gotta try the Chicago stuff! I recommend Giordano's, Uno's, or Gino's. Chicago hot dogs are hot dogs on a poppy seed bun with tomatos, sweet relish, a pickle spear, mustard, onions, and optional hot peppers. NO KETCHUP! If it has ketchup, it's not a Chicago dog.

The Museum of Science & Industry is worth seeing, there's a old United 727-100 there. They use the airplane as a housing for other aviation exhibits, personally I think the airplane should be an exhibit by itself.

If you're looking for nighlife, we used to go to the bars on Rush & Division all the time. The Lodge & Mother's were favorites of ours. Excaliber is the typical 'club', crowded with loud thumping dance music, last time I was there they had new dance music upstairs and 80's downstairs. It's been a few years since I've bar hopped downtown, so I'm probably not the best person to give nightlife advice, but we had some good times down there.

Chicago has perfected pizza this is true! But it sure was not born in Brooklyn! It was however born in Naples, Italy. I've had it in Naples and Chicago and Italian pizza is not quite "American Pizza" but it was quite good in both places!

But back on subject....there is quite a lot to do in Chicago...just depends on what your tastes are. Michigan Ave. is great for people watching, if it's a nice warm day out the bike trail along the lakefront gives you some great views of the lake and the skyline. The Shedd Aquarium is pretty cool...I don't get into Aquariums that much and I thought the Shedd was really cool. There is also the Museum of Natural History and the Museum of Science and Industry....neither of these kept my interest all that much. As far as food goes....there is pizza, Chicago style hot dogs from Portillo's, and greek town is really good. If you want a good website for Chicago things to do check out : Metromix.com

It has reviews on just about all the restaurants and sights in Chicago..plus it lists any special events that may be happening every weekend.

Anyways...sorry about the long post..but hopefully you enjoy your trip to Chicago!

L8R,

Andy

Born chicagoan, I've gotta throw in my 2 cents. There is an unbelievable amount of things to do. All of the below aree either right downtown, or within 10 minutes. Heres the short list.

Food:
--Mr. Beef: Best italian beefs in the city.
--Chicago Chop House: Very upscale steakhouse right downtown. www.chicagochophouse.com
--Rosebud, on Taylor St.: Amazing Italian food in Little Italy! Mind your manners while there, its a known "family" business.
http://www.rosebudrestaurants.com/therosebud.htm

Culture:
--Art Institute of Chicago: Some of the worlds best known pieces are here. Located on Magnificent Mile. http://www.artic.edu/
--Museum of Science and Industry: Worth checking out. U-Boat not open now right now though. www.msichicago.org/
--Navy Pier: Outdoor.Indoor Pier that stretches out Lake Michigan. Huge ferris wheel, stores, IMAX theater, and restaurants with beer gardens. www.navypier.com/

Nightlife:
--Rush and Division: A block of bars and clubs! www.rushanddivision.com
--Many bars and clubs aorund city: same company owns all of these very cool properties around city. From college pubs, to all out mega dance clubs. Find your taste. http://www.aceplaces.com
--Signature Room: This is a lounge on the 95th floor of the Hancock Tower that offers 360 degree views that extend roughly 200+ miles out. AMAZING at night with that special someone. http://www.signaturelounge.com/

If you're gonna be in other parts of the city or 'burbs I can get you info. if you let me know where at. Enjoy.

The place I went to was called "Dani's Pizza", and it was on Lefferts 2 or 3 blocks north of Metro & Lefferts.

(Oh, and gotta love Yerman's Irish Food & Airline Bar on the corner of Metro & Lefferts. Just the name of the place always cracked me up)
