What kind of advice you guys can give for a recent AA grad student? i have a Avia. Tech degree now. Here is the problem I'm having to decide. I was planning to do my flight training at a local FBO and wanted to fly for an airline while doing my BS degree online. But in a case where some regionals aren't hiring anymore b/c of gas prices, I wonder if I should do the training or not. I am thinking of holding it off for 6+ monthes and see how the industry goes. My first planned goal was to flight train, get all license, build time, apply to airline, and working on my 4 yr degree in criminal justice. I am thinking putting this on hold since some regionals aren't hiring anymore? My second goal is I can work for the TSA part/full? time saving up some money while working on my BS degree online. I would have to put my flight training aside due to the fact that I see some bad predications for the airline industry? btw I'm only 19 and turning 20 this summer... Thank you all. |

AA means American Airlines, a single 950mah battery cell, or a special club where you can get help drying out. Or maybe something else????? Local FBO. And a big pile of cash, doled out for each flight/lesson. No advance payments. |

With all the DUI threads going on, I thought you were asking something totally different. |

Haha, I actually thought it meant alcoholics anonymous too... On advice- finish your 4 year and get your flight training and build hours. At the beginning of a downturn is a great time to begin flight training b/c it will be on an upturn by the time you get your jet PIC in.... hopefully.

Here's my advice and I'm no expert, Go ahead and if you can start getting your licenses and going to school, this way you can start you progress, definitely get your instructor licenses and most likely you'll get most of everything before we sort through this mess. Avoid the pilot mills and just go to a regular FBO and do a license at a time without rushing, once you have your CFIs you can instruct while still finishing your degree, this puts you in the best situation. If things get fixed on the airlines you'll be ready to be hire, and also you'll have your degree as a fall back in case you change your mind or something else happens. Student loans are ok, but only for school, try to work or pay your way through flight training, this will minimize your debt once you start at the regionals since first year pay is really low. I've heard of people working at FBOs or academies and getting their flight time for free, i.e work x hours = 1 hour. Good luck |

phoenix, that what I was thinking. I cannot go to school and do flight train at the same time. There is no income coming in to support both. I needed to work. I am planning to take a large sum for flight train through. I can either 1) work and flight train or 2) work and school. Since the industry is having a hard time right now, I can only either choose one option 1 or option 2 but don't know which is best. |

Work and flight train. No one knows what the market is going to be like once you've trained and have some instruction time under your belt. Don't wait until the market is peaked to start training, that's a great way to make sure you miss that hiring wave.
