We had some storms sweep through Austin last night, and it was fascinating to stand outside and watch some of these clouds boil and roll. Made me realize that I don't know enough about Wx with regard to aviation. The weather stuff I've read up on so far is adequate, I guess, but boring as hell to read. Are there any recommended reads/views outside the FAA pubs and Sporty's-type videos that aren't really so dry, or is that the nature of the beast? Looking for suggestions...

Another JCer (formerly a meterologist himself) recommended Weather For Dummies to me. I'm reading it now, and it is definitely a good look at alot of aspects of weather that can be understood and give a foundation to where one can look deeper into those aspects if they wish. There are a few more technical books I have not read yet...

Jeppesen Aviation Weather is a great book. Make sure you get the third edition. My intro-level meteorology class used Ahren's "Essentials of Meteorology" - Also highly recommended. You can probably find a cheap copy online. Gotta watch these random springtime storms around Austin...

The thing I noticed with learning about weather is the more flight experience one gains, the more you understand it. In preparing for the Delta interview, I read Aviation Weather. After experiencing different weather situations, it allowed me to correlate my flight experiences with what they were talking about.

The only thing weather has taught me lately is that patience is a virtue, seeing as how its canceled my CFI ride 3 times in a row now. Not like my entire income this summer depends on it or anything. ![]() As far as a serious observation goes, one day standing outside in summer a huge T-storm is rolling in from the west, the sock is showing a wind from the west. 10 seconds later that sock was showing wind from the east. That storm was sucking air up into it like a vacuum cleaner, and the second it started raining that sock switched back over to a West wind, just like all those (great) books you guys mentioned said it, but it was the first time I'd actually seen it. So keep watching, and I do agree give Jeppesen Weather a try. |

Let me know when you're ready to move into more - slightly - in depth works. It'll be less theory, and more operational though. | |

I learned the most about weather from flying in and close to it.

I just picked up Weather Flying on eBay. Haven't received it yet but seems like an interesting read although not much in the way of graphics.

Im definately going to read up more about WX when im home. Even after passing my ATPL in meterology i still feel somewhat niave in the area. Like people have said ive learnt alot more studying changes in real weather either from watching it roll by, radar outlooks or TAF readouts
