Default Airport Trucking Jobs???

My Dad is really getting tired of doing the Home Delivery gig and want's to move his company elsewhere. So yesterday I went to work with him and he asked me to ask you all if you know anything about Airport Truck Drivers like the ones who move cargo in their private trucks (sorta like a subcontractor in a way) He also thinks it would be a good way to network for me. Any ideas?? The area airports that he would like to potentially work for are EWR, TEB, LGA, and JFK. Could you all give me a little job description as well? My Dad has his own trucks that look like this http://sheldontrucks.com/db1/00036/s...ges/ud2600.JPG

Thanks alot in advance!

Matthew

Trucking company's tend to sub-contract with air freight carriers and most of those contracts are hard to acquire. When I drove I worked for companies large and small as well as owner operators and we could never get that kind of work. The best gig by far is hauling engines back and forth from the various mfgs and airline engine shops. Sometimes you pull a drop deck with a big fan right up underneath an airliner and they stick it on while you watch.

There rally isn't that much in the way of interface between trucking and airports beyond Fed Ex, UPS, DHL etc...the smaller loads like what Airnet would fly usually go plane side in a 12 ft cargo van. Large general freight loads will get delivered to a warehouse on an airport and loaded out the back on contract cargo carriers like Gemini, World, Polar etc...

As to how to get any of this freight..I start with a broker such as CJ Robinson. It's cheap haul usually but you can request airfreight only. That could lead to contacts that could get you direct contract work.

Thanks! He wants to do that. I usually se them parked up next to the wharehouses that are right next to the planes at EWR. That is the kind of trucking that I am talking about.

As was said already it is not easy getting into the "air freight" business because most of those positions are already filled with that cairriers own eqiupment.

That being said. fed ex "ground" is still an all "owner operator fleet" Only problem with that is the size truck in your picture would still be the residential/business delivery type trucks.

DHL is using contract carriers as well.

Another avenue might be doing "hot shot" type work. Which is basically expidited delivery. You get the call for a pick-up and your job is to run it direct to the customer...where ever they may be ASAP!
