Fiber Optics and Aviation. Please help!

Hey. Just wondering if anyone can refer me to some good sources that has info on how fiber optics are used in the aviation field. Mainly, what is it's role and how important is it, as well as any new and future advances it may have. Not sure if this is the right forum but i'm hoping it is. Any help would be appreciated.
