Default Union Work

Have a question for those of you who have worked for your union, be it ALPA, SWAPA, APA, etc.

Can you relate any stories about pilots who the company was trying to fire that you and the union defended and saved their jobs?

Can you relate any people that you had to defend, but thought they were wrong and deserving of punishment?

What are your responsibilities/liabilities for this work? If you provide an "inadequate defense" can the person fired sue you like they could a lawyer? Does the union protect you in this event?

Just curious - lots of banter about this union and that, and criticism. I am really interested in these issues. ALPA, et al do a lot of things besides contracts, and those seem to be little talked about, but are hugely valuable.

Thanks in advance.
