Default Medal of Honor recipient in my logbook...

I stumbled across a name I hadn't thought about in a long time tonight; CDR Clyde E. Lassen, the first Naval Aviator to recieve the Medal of Honor in Viet Nam.

He was CO of HT-8 when I went through as a student Naval Aviator learning to fly helicopters. I had the privilege of flying my two Night Fam flights with him. Very soft-spoken, nice guy.

Here is an excellent article about how he earned his Medal of Honor.

I Googled him tonight and learned 2 things I didn't know:

1. He died in 1994 of cancer.

2. There is a ship named after him, USS Lassen DDG 82, USS Lassen homepage.

His Official Medal of Honor page.

Another good write-up with some pics.

Lassen Wiki.

His grave site if you live close to Pensacola...

I actually ran across Chuck Yeager at an air show in Germany and got him to sign mine.

I have an autographed copy of Randall 'Duke' Cunningham's book about how he became a Navy fighter Ace in Vietnam.

I'm not sure if I think it's think true anymore.. considering he's doing time for fraud while in office as a Congressman... Heehee.

That's a good point! Although, as ridiculously fraudulent as he was, he wasn't very good at hiding it or lying about it. The justice department didn't have to do much work to find evidence. So he's not much of a liar.

Staplgun- Great post!!

Duke was a good fighter in Vietnam, no lying or fraud about that.

Haven't you see the Dog Fights episode with him?

But no. . .really. . .he was a good stick back then.

I'm sure he was. Too many witnesses.

HA HA- I have an autographed copy of his book, too. I think it's titled "Check Six". I met him at the El Toro Air Show, probably around 1988.
