Default Flying to LA

Howdy,

I am currently planning a little cross country trip from Dallas to LA and back in a Cardinal RG and I am looking for some ideas.

I have the first couple of legs sorted, we are gonna visit Carlsbad Caverns and camp there over night, next day we plan going to White Sands and probably stay overnight there.

The day after we want to fly to LA and I have no idea where would be a good place to park the plane for a couple of nights (hopefully not to expensive) and where to stay and what to see. Is there anything on the way that is worth stopping for? I was hoping to fly to Santa Catolina island, possibly overnight, but am not sure of what else is worth doing.

After a couple of days in LA, we will probably fly north, possibly to San Fransisco, then to Yoesemite, and then on the way back to Dallas stop off
at Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon (for some more camping).

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Sedona, AZ is always a great place to visit. I actually prefer Page, AZ. It's beautiful and really close to Monument Valley, NM. Also, you can ask for the Dragon Corridor to fly over the Grand Canyon on the way to CA.

You read my mind. Sedona is GREAT! Just make sure to land on Runway 3 and depart 21. And definitely fly over the Grand Canyon, but make sure to pick up the Grand Canyon VFR sectional. Last updated was in 2001 I think, so don't worry when you see that.

I spent some time yesterday trying to work out a very tentative plan, that will be subject to change, but here goes:

Day 1 morning: KADS - KCNM (Carlsbad Caverns)
Day 2 morning: KCNM - KLRU (White Sands)
Day 3 morning: KLRY - KSEZ (Sedona)
Day 4 morning: KSEZ - KHHR (LA)
Day 6 Morning: KHHR - KAVX (Catalina Island)
Day 6 Afternoon: KAVX - KMRY (Monterey)
Day 7 Afternoon: KMRY - 61B (Hoover Dam)
Day 8 Afternoon: 61B - KGCN (Grand Canyon)
Day 9 Morning: KGCN - KADS (Home)

We need to knock off at least one day off that and we don't want to feel like we have to rush the whole time. Thinking about skipping White Sands and Hoover Dam. Can probably do a pretty good fly-by of both and that would save a lot of time and give us more time for other things.

Also, what is to do in Sedona? Initially thought it would be good to detour on the way from NM to LA, although would it make more sense to hit up Sedona on the way home and just stop in Pheonix or somewhere on the way west?

Also, I still need some ideas for places to park in LA.

Thanks again
